I'm supporting Roof Over My Heart because I love supporting the expansion of housing — but I cannot stomach bad actors who take people's hard-earned money and disappear with it.
I spent years as an affiliate sales representative in the tiny home and ADU space. I built relationships with builders I trusted. I helped buyers find their way through a complicated process. And I watched that process work.
Then I sold 11 ADUs for a contractor and only one was installed. The other ten families lost their deposits, timelines, and in many cases their trust that safe, attainable housing was ever truly possible.
I lost something too. Earnings I believed I had legitimately made disappeared the moment I realized those homes were never going to be built. What makes it harder is that I had already survived two builders going out of business on me. I thought I knew what to watch for. I thought this time was different.
How wrong I was.
What I've learned since is that the system fails people not because they weren't careful enough, but because they didn't have the right framework, the right questions, or anyone in their corner before they signed and paid. The education gap is real. And it is expensive.
That is exactly what Roof Over My Heart is focusing on...closing the gap.
Andrea Montano and her team don't just support individual victims — they are changing the system that allows this to keep happening. Their work spans consumer protection advocacy for construction fraud victims, housing policy research, and legislative reform.
ROMH helped pass West Sacramento's tiny home ordinance. They have been advocating for the legalization of tiny homes since 2021. They have developed a proposed legislative package designed to stop the bleeding, transform the system, and protect future buyers.
Right now Roof Over My Heart is providing direct guidance and evidence compilation for hundreds of contractor fraud victims across multiple active cases in California.
This is unglamorous, essential work. And it deserves real support.
I'm supporting this work because I believe in accountability. Because I've seen firsthand what happens when buyers are left without protection, without advocacy, and without someone who simply believes them. And because Andrea and her team are doing something about it — not just for the people already harmed, but for every family that comes after them.
If you've ever wondered whether your contribution can matter — in this space, at this moment — it can. These families are still in it. And so are we.
