Solutions for living sustainably

This picture of an Anna's hummingbird was taken by my daughter, Maya Mehta, when she was 7 years old. The pandemic had shut down schools. We were fortunate to have many outdoor places, parks, creeks and rivers to explore the outdoors, safely.

I was a birder myself, back in India as a youngster, but it had been a long time since I had been into it. It was time to sow the seeds for another generation of earth-lovers to embrace and protect this lovely world that is our home. Maya took to it immediately, and now at the age of 12, she continues to be an amazing birder, naturalist, and photographer. I know that she will continue to value the natural world, understanding deeply that we humans are very much a part of it, not something separate from it. 

I am particularly aware that it has been my local community's love for nature and natural spaces, that has allowed me to sow these seeds of love for nature for my daughter. And this time of year is very important for supporting our communities and local non-profits working on conservation, sustainable living, and environmental justice. I hope that wherever you are, you can donate to a local organization - with  your time volunteering, or money, or other acts of service. 

I'm proud to be a volunteer Board member of Cool Davis, a local community-based non-profit working on home-neighborhood-regional solutions for energy, transportation and coalition-building.

• Engage neighbors in building Climate Ready Neighborhoods
• Expand our "Make a Plan for Your Clean Energy Home", and "Ride Cool" programs 
• Train volunteer teams working with households in multifamily apartments and neighborhoods
• Strengthen our collaboration and coalition-building with other organizations 
• Respond to increasing requests for help from the communities we work with
