Family and Friends,
Not too many of you know this, but many years ago I was a CASA volunteer assigned to Sac County foster youth. It was easily one of the most challenging undertakings of my young life, and one of the most rewarding. I was raised by two public school system educators, but it was the first time I had been in any sort of child advocacy role myself. My mother just retired from teaching Kindergarten full time three years ago (at age 78?!) and has always instilled in me the importance of making a difference in children's lives, often one child at a time. As with so many other things, it turns out that my mom was right. The outcomes for foster kids with someone in their corner whose only interest is that child's success are exponentially different than those without:
-The National CASA Association has found that a child with an advocate has a better chance of staying connected to siblings, completing high school, and attending college.
-Children matched with a CASA volunteer are less likely to fall prey to drugs, violence, and trafficking.
-One year of CASA advocacy costs less than one month of foster care and a youth is less likely to require public assistance or be incarcerated as an adult if they've had CASA Volunteer support.
I realize that many of you are being asked to donate to so many worthy causes on this 2025 Big Day of Giving. What I am asking is that you consider using those funds to change the world, starting in Sacramento County, one child at a time.
Sincerely,
Kimio
About: CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Sacramento County provides stability and advocacy to children in the foster care system. Volunteers are trained and sworn in with the court system and matched one-on-one with a child in foster care. CASA Volunteers provide mentorship and support to that child and advocate on their behalf in court. They are often the only consistent, stable adult in the child’s life.
It takes $2,500 to provide a foster child with a CASA Volunteer and 25 children are waiting. Please help me raise money to get these children their CASA.
