When I began working for CASA Sacramento in 2018, I had some passing familiarity with what a CASA Volunteer does. I learned enough to talk to prospective volunteers and donors with confidence, because I believed in the program model of matching a volunteer with one child in the foster care system to advocate for their best interests.

Today, that belief hasn't changed. What has changed, however, is my understanding of and appreciation for a CASA Volunteer's impact. I've spent the past 5 years hearing stories of advocates who are changing lives. Advocates who show up for their youth every day. Advocates who help their youth explore new passions and interests. Advocates who drop everything to make sure their youth is safe in an emergency. Advocates who are the first person in their youth's life to ever celebrate their birthday.

The Sacramento region is full of smart, generous, kindhearted people doing amazing work, but there's more to be done. CASA Sacramento is only serving about 20% of Sacramento County's youth in foster care annually, leaving hundreds of kids without need a consistent, caring adult in their corner.

In order for the CASA program to grow, we need our communities to step up. Maybe it's time for you to sign up for an orientation and find out if you are ready to make the commitment to become a Court Appointed Special Advocate Volunteer.

If it's not, please consider donating and helping fund the training and supervision of a volunteer who will be matched with a child who needs them.
