Aloha,
Thank you so much for choosing to support our Hālau(school) that means so much to me. My name is Kawena and I have been a hāumana(student) since 2018. I originally joined as a way to dance again post high school, thinking that it was going to be a fun hobby. I can honestly say I had no idea the kuleana(responsibility) that it held, but once I understood the importance of perpetuating the culture I was dedicated to making it my purpose too.
Iʻve had the absolute pleasure of dancing with Kumu Kaponookalani since the start of my hula journey and itʻs been nothing short of amazing. We pride ourselves of educating our hāumana, making sure that we are going things pono(right). We hold regular workshops that teach how to make lole(costumes), leis, other adornments, and implements. That also means that we educate the communities with volunteering our time to share moʻolelo(stories), Ōlelo Hawaiʻi(Hawaiian language) and mele(songs) through hula.
Additionally, we travel to Hawaiʻi for learning under Kumu Hula Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, which is an amazing learning experience for all hāumana that are able to attend. This is only made possible by donations and fundraising as we are able to help hāumana with the costs of travel and workshops. Mahalo nui(Thank you) for reading and supporting our Hālua and hāumana!
