$50,000 Goal

In 2017 a network of friends and colleagues came together, determined to build a new kind of company for Davis. Our goal: a democratically run company, where a Core of artists could work together to bring dynamic, new work to our community. We came together with a slogan that encompasses what we do--Expect Everything!--and a name that grounds us: Bike City Theatre Company. We're a resource for the community socially, theatrically, and educationally.

The OTHER Thing We Need...Overhead

Bike City doesn't have a traditional theater space. We specialize in pop up shows at schools, art galleries, breweries, and the great outdoors! It's kept our overhead down and has kept us OPEN during the pandemic... Radio Tuesdays, anyone?

Theatre on the Block in Summer 2021?

The pandemic absorbed our limited overhead.

Producing as much work as we do means general operating costs.  Glamorous and fun things like:

  • insurance(s)
  • transportation and gas
  • technology  and administrative equipment
  • graphic design (bless you, Aaron at SmartzGraphics for all our amazing work)
  • marketing
  • printing
  • website maintenance
  • payroll
  • storage

Your donations keep the ship running.

Mission

Bike City Theatre Company is a non-profit, collectively run theater company based in Davis, CA. Our mission is to create theater that is sustainable, invested in the community, and vibrantly, provocatively theatrical. We are a center for new work and creators of bespoke educational theater for young audiences.

On Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Founded in 2017 with the goal of sharing the scope of human experience through sustainable, community-oriented theatre we recognize that our community--and our company--intersect with our nation’s history of economic, social, cultural, and racial oppression. We have no illusions: we understand that these systems of oppression are reflected in BCTC’s company practices, albeit unintentionally. Spurred by the national conversation, we’ve engaged with our company members, our community, and the global theatrical community to determine how to create a more equitable, welcoming, and just space for all marginalized populations. Please see our Action Plan at www.bikecitytheatre.org/diversityequity-statement.

Needs

$30k + SOUND EQUIPMENT for

Bespoke Theater for Young Audiences

Our robust program of award winning productions for young audiences have toured through Yolo and Solano Counties at ZERO cost to the schools. It's all made possible through our amazing community through fundraising and with robust support from the City of Daivs Arts and Cultural Affairs program.

What we learned?

Auditoriums are L O U D.

So our Sound Design expert created a list of ideal equipment that will allow us to be heard whether we're performing LIGHT THE WAY: A BICYCLE SAFETY MUSICAL in a cafeteria or THEATRE ON THE BLOCK on your street.

We are in pre-production with the City of Davis Safe Routes to Schools program and the Solano Safe Routes program, as well as working on a collaboration with Walk Sacramento to bring back LIGHT THE WAY --and our new musical GOOD EARTH--as soon as possible!

$20k COMPANY OVERHEAD

Including--but not limited to--

*New, secured storage facility

*Payroll services

*Stipend for a part-time tour manager

*A decent printer

*Maintenance and repair on Blue (the Company Van)

And more we haven't even thought of yet because making art in this world is exciting!

WHO WE ARE

Bike City Theatre Company is a small, democratic, volunteer-run theatre company based in Davis, California. We were founded in 2017 with the goal of sharing the scope of human experience through sustainable, community-oriented theatre. But our community--and our company--intersect with our nation’s history of economic, social, cultural, and racial oppression.

In July 2020 we performed an internal audit of all works we have selected since 2017. In the 2.5 years since our founding 44% of our selections have involved BIPOC writers and 50% have involved writers who identify as LGBTQIA+. After an internal demographic survey of our active Core, Company Members, and Interns with 100% participation we discovered that our collective is 38.8% POC, 38.8% LGBTQIA+, and that 44.4% of our company members are disabled or chronically ill. The majority of BCTC is female identifying, but the majority of our board is male identifying and white. We include these statistics to be radically transparent about where we are, and where we’re aiming to go.

WHAT’S NEXT

Our company’s mission offers that “we’re artists of the world, but seek to be influenced by the ebbs and flows of experience rooted in this place.” We’re a company within a place, within a flawed system that we’re working from within to change. We hope you’ll support us in this mission, and continue to support our creation of powerful, diverse, empathetic stories that delight us and help us grow.
