The People's Vanguard of Davis

Reviewed by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation

The Vanguard provides the Davis Community with incisive in-depth coverage of local government on a wide variety of issues. Since 2006, The Vanguard has provided Davis and Yolo County with some of the best groundbreaking news coverage on local government and policy issues affecting our city, our schools, the county, and the Sacramento Region. Our organization became a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 2012.

Mission

The People's Vanguard of Davis is a community-based watchdog and news reporting organization that publishes daily coverage of local government and criminal justice reform. The Vanguard seeks to bring transparency, accountability, and fairness to local government and the courts, while promoting social justice and democracy, and adhering to principles of accuracy and fairness in our reporting.

Needs

The Vanguard Court Watch program is dedicated to reporting and monitoring court cases. This program has allowed interns the opportunity to publish articles, watch live court cases, and learn about the criminal justice system and local reporting.

The Davis Vanguard currently hosts a Court Watch Program in 3 branches: Yolo County, Sacramento County, and San Francisco County. Our funding ranges from office space and supplies to website expenses. Your contributions will help in keeping the court proceedings transparent and accountable.

We expanded our Court Watch Program to San Francisco in June 2019 and are considering expanding our program further into other California counties, such as Los Angeles.

In addition to our Court Watch Program, our organization needs funds in order to host fundraiser events relating to criminal justice reform. Among the topics we've held events, we've addressed the need to reform the prosecution system and immigration. During these events, we invite guest speakers from all across the country.

The Davis Vanguard at UC Davis is a student-run online news publication presenting campus news, city news, social justice issues, and student opinions. Students interested in writing for the Davis Vanguard at UCD will have the opportunity to develop a strong journalistic portfolio, gain experience with community outreach, training with an experienced Sacramento journalist, and earn academic credit.

Any donations are appreciated in supporting our organization.
