Bringing in a new immigration lawyer would help expand the cases CRLAF takes on through our Citizenship and Immigrant Services Project. Currently, we provide informational services, high quality legal assistance, advocacy support, and capacity building to rural and hard-to-reach communities in the legal deserts of northern California and the Central Valley. Through outreach and Know Your Rights presentations, we provide community members and the organizations serving them information related to constitutional rights, family emergency planning, protection from immigration fraud, and types of available immigration relief.
We also have a robust direct services program that provides legal consultations and direct representation to individuals applying for status before the immigration courts in removal proceedings and before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Our attorneys and accredited representatives help clients navigate various types of immigration benefits, including VAWA, T visas, U visas, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), naturalization, family-based immigration benefits, asylum, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS). Our clients include adults, children, and unaccompanied minors, many of whom have lived through trauma in their countries of birth or in the United States.
In our capacity as a State Bar-funded Support Center, CRLAF builds on our 30-year experience as a trainer for legal services advocates and social services providers on immigrant eligibility for immigration relief and public benefits and more than 45 years screening and advising rural mixed status families about their constitutional and legal rights as workers, tenants, students, patients, and community members.
A new immigration lawyer would allow for expanded legal support including new capacity to bring habeas petitions to support our detained clients who lack equitable access to immigration legal services.
