“It’s a win-win for both the planet and the seniors we serve.”
As a ten-acre landscaped campus founded for senior residents in 1964, St. John’s Retirement Village is now undertaking a large-scale campaign to reduce energy and water consumption. By lowering a number of our operational costs, we can pass those savings onto our residents. As a nonprofit, the money saved isn’t going to profits – it’s being reinvested directly into making life more affordable for our seniors!
Collaborating with the City of Woodland’s Water-Wise rebate program, master gardeners, and Evergreen Enterprises, the St. John’s team is moving to xeriscape landscaping by replacing acres of lawns with mulch, replacing water timers with smart weather-based irrigation controllers, and incorporating rain barrels and composting bins through the rebate program. We are also monitoring all water usage utilizing AquaHawk and remediating sources of excess water usage.
Our goal isn’t just to save money in the short term, but to create a financially sustainable model that can support seniors for years to come. Replacing the countless outdated incandescent lights to solar and to LED lights means 75 percent less energy usage and lasting 15-50 times longer.
By investing in sustainable practices such as xeri
scaping, and reducing water / energy usage, St. John’s Retirement Village is passing this savings onto its residents. “It’s a win-win for both the planet and the people we serve.”
“We’re proud of the strides we’ve made in reducing our environmental impact, but there’s still more work to do. We need to replace most of our lighting, and to purchase more irrigation controllers and drip systems. With your support, we can continue to lower costs, enhance care, and make this beautiful campus more affordable for seniors. Your contribution of financial and/or volunteer support can help us expand our sustainable efforts and ensure every resident can benefit from affordable quality care.”
