Anderson's Story

Update posted 1 month ago

When Anderson came to Little Paws Doggie Rescue, he came with a list that would have made most rescues turn him away without a second thought. He was at least 12 years old, mostly blind and nearly deaf. He had a grade 5-6 heart murmur, severe arthritis, and massive oronasal fistulas so significant that food was getting trapped behind his eye. The vets who examined him knew he would need a lot of care, but that didn't deter us. We knew he could still have a beautiful life.

Here at Little Paws, we don't look at a dog's age or medical chart and decide how much they deserve. We look at who they are, and we knew Anderson was a dog who could still give so much.

With the support of our donors, we were able to get Anderson the dental surgery he needed, manage his pain, and give him the care that allowed him to feel like himself again. And then we found him the perfect person.

His adopter didn't see a difficult dog. He saw a companion. He tucked Anderson into a baby sling so that those clouded eyes could still take in the world, and together they went everywhere. Coffee shops and restaurants. Hikes through trails Anderson never could have navigated on his own. Adventures that a dog other people would think was "too old" had no business going on, and went on anyway, because someone decided he was worth the effort of showing up for.

Anderson didn't just survive, he lived. He had old-man zoomies and made a wonderful friend with his new adopted brother. He inspired a complete stranger, so moved by seeing him nestled in that sling out in the world, to press sixty dollars into his adopter's hands right there in a parking lot because she wanted to be part of whatever this was. She didn't know Anderson. But she knew something beautiful when she saw it.

Anderson had so many new experiences in that special time with his family before he passed. And when he did sadly pass away, his adopter sat down and wrote us pages. Pages about everything they had done together, every moment, every small joy and grand adventure, how grateful he was that Little Paws had trusted him with this little old dog, and how profoundly Anderson had changed his life. He ended it with this: "Everyone, go adopt a hospice animal. I promise you won't regret it."

We think about Anderson all the time. Not with sadness, but with the kind of fullness that comes from knowing something mattered. His story is exactly why we do this work. It isn't always about having more time. It's about making the time count, and ensuring that every dog who comes through our doors knows what it feels like to be truly loved.

This Big Day of Giving, we are asking you to help us create more Anderson stories.

The medical care that gave Anderson that precious extra time, the dental surgery, the medications, the rehabilitation, was made possible entirely through donations from people who believed, as we do, that even a dog with a grade 5-6 heart murmur and multiple medical challenges, deserves everything. Your donation to Little Paws funds that care for the dogs no one else will take. It funds the second chances that turn into the best chapters. It funds the doggie/baby slings and the adventures and the pages of love letters that follow.

Please donate today and help us give the next Anderson his moment. Every dollar makes a difference, and every dog deserves to be someone's whole world.

About us

Little Paws Doggie Rescue is a small, local, all-volunteer, non-profit dog rescue in the Sacramento area. We specialize in small dogs that are senior, hard-to-place, injured, abused or neglected. Most of our dogs come from the Sacramento area but they are placed within all of our surrounding counties. Some are surrendered by seniors that can no longer care for them. Others are found wandering the streets and are never claimed, but most come from our local animal shelters. Since most of our dogs are seniors, abused or neglected, they require more time in our system and have higher medical bills. These dogs require a lot of care, love and patience but with help from people like you they will find a special person to love them for whatever time they have left whether it be six months, a year or 10 years.

We run solely off donations, so each dollar donated helps us reach our goal of $15,000. The money donated helps us pay for medical treatments and vet bills, and ensures we can continue to get more doggies into loving homes they so desperately need.

Our Senior Story

This year we are raising money to help us rescue more seniors. These older dogs are often overlooked and typically have higher medical bills. This can put people off adopting, but at Little Paws Doggie Rescue, we believe seniors have so much to give and no senior should be left behind.

Below are some examples of our recent senior rescues and costs involved in rescuing them:

Your donation helps more dogs like Anderson, Helen, Wilbur and many others have a safe and loving retirement. Please donate today.
