Our railroad yard has always been a place of second chances.

Old railroad equipment come in rusted and forgotten, and with enough hands and heart, they roll out gleaming again. But sitting in a generous donator is something far more special than any old piece of equipment — an SP caboose, weathered but proud, waiting for a future that only we can give it.

The faded red paint still whispers of the Southern Pacific’s glory days. The bold white “SP” lettering, chipped and sun-bleached, carries the weight of thousands of miles traveled behind rumbling locomotives. From its cupola, conductors once watched endless freight cars snake across deserts and mountains.

But time has not been gentle.

The steel underframe needs attention. It needs careful restoration — and before that can even begin, it needs to come home.

Moving the caboose to our railroad yard is the first hurdle. Specialized heavy-haul transport, cranes for safe lifting, insurance, permits — the logistics alone carry a significant cost. It cannot simply be hooked up and pulled away. Every mile it travels now must be deliberate and protected.

And then comes the real work.

We don’t just want to park it as a static display. Our vision is to restore it to operating condition — fully functional brakes, compliant safety systems, authentic interior restoration, proper lighting, and historically accurate details. We want visitors to step inside and feel what it was like to bring up the rear of a freight train in the golden era of railroading. We want it to ride the rails again during special events, lantern glowing at dusk, a living ambassador of railroad history.

But preservation takes more than passion.

It takes funding.

Every dollar raised will directly support:

  • Professional heavy-haul transport to move the caboose safely to our yard
  • Crane services for loading and track placement
  • Structural steel repairs and underframe work
  • Brake system restoration and certification
  • Interior rehabilitation
  • Paint and lettering in authentic Southern Pacific livery
  • Safety compliance to meet operating requirements

This caboose is more than steel and wood. It represents the end of an era — when railroad crews worked from these rolling offices, when freight trains still carried a human presence at the rear. Cabooses disappeared from mainline service decades ago, replaced by modern technology. Each surviving example is increasingly rare.

If we succeed, this SP caboose won’t sit forgotten in a back yard. It will become:

  • A hands-on educational exhibit for local schools
  • A centerpiece for railroad history events
  • A symbol of preservation done right
  • A working piece of history that moves under its own wheels

We are asking for help not just to move a railcar, but to move history forward.

With community support, this caboose can once again roll proudly — lantern lit, paint shining, children waving as it passes. Without funding, it risks deteriorating beyond recovery, another artifact lost to time and scrapping torches.

Railroads built this country town by town. Now we have the chance to preserve one small but powerful piece of that story.

Help us bring the SP caboose home — and bring it back to life.
