Board President Joe Herold reflects on the 23/24 Coalition for the Homeless community impact:

I recently participated in a site visit with a representative from the State of California to review construction progress at our Bear’s Den property and existing units and services at Bird’s Nest and Red Lodge. As she was leaving us after visiting Red Lodge, the representative remarked how important it was for her to see in person “what it can look like” when funds are effectively spent, and services are comprehensively and compassionately delivered. I drove home feeling a deep sense of satisfaction to represent an organization that is aggressively pursuing its vision and consistently delivering on its mission. I also felt gratitude to a number of people.

I am grateful for our incredible team, led by our Executive Director, Kimberly Peterson. Facing daily challenges beyond what most of us deal with in our jobs and activities, our dedicated staff deliver life-changing services to our clients with kindness, compassion, and respect. I find their work heartwarming and inspiring.

I am grateful to our Board, who not only provide outstanding experience and energy but also add hard work when needed by our staff. They have been found doing demolition work at Bear’s Den, cleaning and painting at Red Lodge, shoveling snow during extreme winter conditions, helping serve meals, working on our website, and driving our fundraising efforts. I am especially thankful for the Board members who conceived of and breathed life into this organization; I am in awe of their compassion and perseverance.

I am grateful to our donors, from those like Kyle & Jessica Aster and the Parasol Foundation who have provided significant gifts, to those who fuel our monthly giving program. I am also grateful to those who make donations, large or small, when they are able. Your gifts make a great difference in our community and the lives of our clients. Thank you for your generosity, kindness, and support. Finally, I am grateful to partners like the State of California, El Dorado County, the City of South Lake Tahoe, local law enforcement agencies, Barton Memorial Hospital, and others who collaborate with us. Together we are working effectively to house, shelter, and support our neighbors experiencing or at risk of homelessness to foster their independence. It is an honor to partner with you on this important work for our clients and the community
