The GreenHouse has a special place in our hearts. This local Sacramento non-profit is one of the reasons I (Rachel) first moved out to California and now I have the honor of serving on their Board of Directors.
The Greenhouse serves their neighborhood block (with 567 children!) by drawing on the strengths of the community and working with families to address systemic issues that affect this often under-resourced area. They offer after school programs focusing on 1:1 academic support, mentorship relationships, and leadership development.
Two of the things I loved seeing the GreenHouse develop the past year are the Parent Council and their new reading program. The Parent Council is comprised of parents from the neighborhood who help direct the priorities of the GreenHouse and build critical relationships in the community. The reading program, born out of increased challenges during COVID, provides a strategic reading schedule to meet individual students at their level and work with them on a one on one basis.
The plan for a portion of the money raised this year at Big Day of Giving is to hire a Parent Engagement Director and continue to resource and staff the reading program.
It is such a gift to get to work with the GreenHouse and see how they are impacting those around them. If anyone wants to learn more, I would be more than happy to chat!
