When Kareem was just eight years old, his mother reached out to us in distress. She had received troubling news from his charter school – they were considering expulsion. With a meeting scheduled for the next day, she sought our assistance to represent her. I promptly inquired about the school's handbook to familiarize myself with their policies, to which she assured she would send a PDF copy.

The following morning, we met the parent at the school. Inside the principal's office, discussions commenced with a review of attendance and behavioral records, accompanied by thinly veiled threats of dismissal if immediate improvements weren't made.

Upon requesting to inspect the attendance report, it became evident that the principal was conflating tardiness with absences, attempting to manipulate the situation to force the child out of school. Moreover, his claims regarding disciplinary issues were exaggerated, primarily stemming from peer reports rather than staff observations. As our interrogation persisted and we reviewed teacher reports, the principal's demeanor shifted to frustration, realizing that our understanding of school operations surpassed his assumptions. Abruptly, he terminated the meeting, demanding our departure.

Refusing to accept this injustice, I promptly contacted the principal's superior, whom I knew from previous district engagements. After detailing the incident, a new meeting was swiftly arranged for the following day, emphasizing the parent's presence.

Fast forward to today, Kareem is thriving at Sacramento State University, embarking on his college journey at the age of eighteen.

It's worth noting that the principal departed the district the subsequent year, hopefully leaving behind his unethical practices.

What happens to Kareem without the Black Parallel School Boards involvement?
