These are just some of the values that George and Kurdel Spillman, instilled in their Children.
The Spillman Family Legacy Scholarship has become an annual tradition granting a number of young woman scholarships to lessen the financial burdens of college.
Education was never an “if” but a “when”. Their goal was to foster in us the importance of education and to be able to be of service to others, and pay it forward.
Growing up, there was a wall in our home that displayed everyone’s diplomas, service awards, and scholarship awards. Looking back, it could have been called the Spillman Wall of Achievement. However, it was never seen as boastful, but rather to remind us what we accomplished to allow us to see where we could still go because possibilities were endless. That was a visual of goals and aspiration, but words and deeds were always plentiful from our parents, not only to us but our friends, family neighbors and our community.
The ability to receive an education is not guaranteed, and when one is fortunate enough to receive the benefits of an education, it is paid forward to all our families and community. The investment in our youth yields benefits tenfold to a brighter future not only to them but future generations.
So it is with these values of service to others and paying it forward, that we come to you, family and friends to ask your assistance in continuing the values of our parents legacy and supporting the good we want to see in the world. Some of you may have already directly benefited from our parents and we hope that you will be a part of the building blocks that make the future brighter for youth and hence making a difference in their family and the community.
The Spillman Legacy Scholarship aims to support young women as they pursue higher education.
