Khaliah and I found ourselves picking up trash during the pandemic as a means to stave off boredom and do something productive. Like-minded trash warriors joined us and propelled us to start the Elk Grove Anti-Trash group, and with their support we've made monumental strides in cleaning the creeks and drainage basins and parks of the city and have met so many inspiring people while getting in the best physical shape of our lives. Who needs a gym when you can work out in nature?
However, Elk Grove is but a part of Sacramento County. We joined the River City Waterway Alliance in cleaning Sacramento's trashed waterways to undo the decades upon decades of blight and neglect to give future generations a chance to enjoy a thriving habitat. It takes an army to undo some of the damage to our polluted waterways, and I am proud to be one of the trash warriors.
I am now on the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Area Creeks Council. They raise funds to preserve, protect, restore and maintain the natural streams in our urban communities through education, advocacy, financial support and technical expertise. They allow us in Elk Grove to continue our work in keeping our streets and parks from becoming trashy and give people, young and old, a reason to enjoy the outdoors without eyesores.
They are a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit that raises funds and support groups like the River City Waterway Alliance. Donations to the Creeks Council support the purchase of tools, event supplies, volunteer refreshments, and fuel. All donations are leveraged by donations from other individuals, grants, and in-kind support from public agencies and the hundreds of hours donated by local volunteers to protect and restore Sacramento’s waterways.
Give during the donation window, now through May 2, 2025. The minimum gift is $10, but even small donations can make a big difference. Contributions are tax deductible. Federal ID # 26-3676166.
