How I've Been Involved with The Root:
I waited a long time to get around to having a kid and I had a tough pregnancy in my late 30s. I was missing a community of other birthing people and the last time I spent any real time around a baby was in my teens!
My healthcare provider didn’t even offer a tour of the hospital where I was to give birth, much less offer any classes on labor or newborn care. I knew I needed more than that. I needed community, emotional support, and someone to teach me how to be a modern parent!
Enter the Root. Prenatal Yoga classes showed me how to stretch my round ligament and relieve some of my pain. A pregnancy support circle offered me a critical space to talk about how I was struggling, and practical suggestions for a birth plan. The education classes were windows into what was ahead in newborn care. But I was most surprised by how valuable the post-partum community has been. The Root has been my roadmap in early motherhood, not only taught by experts (although there are experts) but shoulder-to-shoulder with other new moms navigating this new life together.
Why I'm Supporting The Root's Continued Sustainability and Expanded Services:
Quite simply, I want the Root to continue to exist and make it so expecting parents can receive the education and community regardless of economic circumstances.
Note From The Root Team:
This Big Day of Giving we are hoping to raise a total of $10,000 to put towards programming for our non-profit to offer class vouchers to expectant parents in South Sacramento served by our partners at the Valley Hi, Meadowview and La Familia family resource centers. In addition, this campaign will allow us to continue our programming at The Root's flagship location in East Sacramento in addition to supporting our continued pilot of pop-up classes throughout Sacramento both at the family resource centers and other community locations.
No parent should go into their birth and postpartum journeys without feeling equipped to navigate the complex perinatal systems in our area.
It is our goal that every pregnant family in Sacramento have access to the fitness, educational and community supports that The Root provides, without cost being a barrier.
