Sol Collective

Based in Sacramento, Sol Collective collaborates with global and local artists and activists to host art exhibitions, community workshops, youth programming, and platforms for community organizing from coast to coast. Sol Collective works at the intersections of arts, culture, and activism using the arts as a means of community building, organizing, and empowerment. Sol Collective offers innovative, culturally relevant programming in the arts, health, tech, and media to inspire the next generation of creatives and community leaders.

Mission

Sol Collective is a community-based 501(c)(3) partnership whose mission is to provide artistic, cultural, and educational programming, promote social justice, and empower youth of color, marginalized, and underserved communities through art, activism, music, and media.

Needs

Last year Sol Collective purchased the building we had been renting since 2009. Our goals to continue renovation of the space at 2574 21st street include building out more gallery and workshop space, an industrial teaching kitchen, a community cafe, expanding the existing retail space, and eventually adding artist living. In 2019 we are focused on expanding the front gallery and the recording studio/media lab in addition to beginning work on the industrial teaching kitchen.

Our programs work to empower traditionally marginalized communities by promoting black and brown, LGBTQA+, youth, and female voices and expression through media and the arts starting from a young age.

For over a decade Sol Collective has provided space for community groups to hold workshops, meetings, and events and offered project-based arts education including music production, graphic design, video production, creative writing, silk-screening, and urban gardening. Current programs include youth music production/open mics, the Sacramento Activist School, Solistic traditional healing workshops, art labs, quarterly kids fest, Sol Life Media, Global Local Mercado, and large scale community events and activations such as Souls of the City (Dia De Los Muertos), the Global Local Festival, and a yearly SXSW showcasing cultural artists and creatives from the city of Sacramento.

Your donations will help us to continue providing cutting edge access and education surrounding new media technologies to the most traditionally marginalized communities.

Sol Collective promotes community empowerment through arts and media accessibility. Since 2005 Sol Collective has offered a consistent platform for black and brown, LGBTQA+, youth, and women to create the narratives surrounding their communities. The development of Sol Life Media in 2014 including written/blog content, graphic design, video editing, and podcasting continues to help create a school-to-newsroom pipeline in the Sacramento community and throughout the world. The cultivation of the Global Local AR Magazine (an augmented reality infused publication documenting best practices in art, culture, and activism throughout the world) in 2019 is allowing communities to tell their own stories and bringing journalism to life in a new way.

We are currently seeking in-kind donations of building supplies, furniture, and new technology towards the renovation of the building.

We are currently seeking grantwriting and fundraising support/development professionals.
