$15,000 Goal

Pathways to Employment, established in 2017, is a non-profit that aims to empower young adults with developmental disabilities by providing them with the skills necessary for employment and volunteer opportunities. Our organization believes in the employment potential of all individuals and is committed to promoting social change by offering a sense of purpose, community, and independence.

In the fall of 2017, our organization began operating concession stands at local soccer games, staffed by volunteer students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism, from nearby schools. Our clients also began creating handmade items to enhance our offerings and boost sales at the stands that same year.

Since then, we have acquired a 2,500-square-foot office in Fair Oaks and established our Job Readiness Program. Having a permanent location enables us to serve a greater number of clients on a more frequent basis. We provide fee-based classes that focus on physical fitness, cooking, arts and crafts, and employment training. These classes are open to the general public as well. We emphasize the importance of building relationships between our clients and those without disabilities.

Our Employment Skills Training initiative is designed to equip young adults with developmental disabilities with the necessary job skills to succeed in the workforce. Through hands-on experience at various businesses and volunteer organizations in the community, our program offers real-world employment opportunities to help clients develop their skills. For instance, at our pop-up stands clients have the chance to participate in direct sales, whether it be handling cash transactions, greeting customers, or bagging items. Our weekly coffee cart service allows clients to take direct orders, prepare drinks and receive payment. Beyond these sales experiences, our clients have also participated in a laundry business, dog walking service, and volunteered at the SPCA and Auburn Interfaith Food Bank. Our ultimate goal is to create a world where everyone who wants to work has the chance to do so, regardless of any disabilities they may have.

In 2023, we launched our weekly coffee cart business and created a free paper shredding service. Given that our target group comprises individuals with high-intensity behaviors, our success rests heavily on our ability to recruit and train competent staff. This population, despite having the most pressing needs, remains largely neglected in our region but possesses great potential to contribute to both the workforce and the community. Our goal in 2024 is to diversify our client base in order to serve more developmentally disabled adults. To help us achieve our objectives, we seek financial support from individuals and corporations. Your generosity is much appreciated.

Here's what our client's parents are saying about Pathways to Employment:

"We’ve found an awesome social group for Big Dude that he is loving! They made ornaments and snowmen fruit kabobs this visit. Grateful for the wonderful folks at Pathways to Employment for the opportunity!"

"Shout out to my dear friend, Kim for creating this beautiful space for our children to develop friendships, make crafts, and practice their social skills. We are so grateful!"

"I'm truly grateful to have found a safe, welcoming program for my son to practice his social skills. If you know a teen or young adult on the spectrum who's struggling with isolation or just looking to make new friendships, check out Pathways to Employment social skills program!"

Mission

Pathways to Employment provides a sense of purpose, community and independence to developmentally disabled adults through employment, life and social skills training.

Needs

Pathways to Employment has placed multiple clients in meaningful work & volunteer positions throughout Northern California. Our community members benefit from the direct interaction they get with our clients and start to see our young adults for more than just being disabled. Our areas of need are as follows:

1. Volunteer and/or employment opportunities for our developmentally disabled clients.

2. Charitable donations to cover rent, payroll, curriculum & marketing expenses.

3. Donations of equipment and supplies such as job training materials, sports equipment, printer paper, coffee cart supplies, art materials, toiletries, and cleaning products.

4. Board members. We are actively seeking community leaders who have a passion for the I/DD community and want to make a difference!

Equity Statement

At Pathways to Employment, we are committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in all aspects of our organization. We recognize that individuals with developmental disabilities face unique challenges in accessing education, employment, and other opportunities, and we are committed to breaking down these barriers.

We believe that a diverse and inclusive workforce is essential to our success and the success of our clients. We are committed to providing an environment that is welcoming and inclusive to all individuals, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, or other identities. We believe that our differences are what make us strong, and we strive to create a culture of respect and understanding where everyone feels valued and supported.

Our commitment to DEI is reflected in our programs and services. We strive to provide individualized support that meets the unique needs of each client, recognizing that everyone has different abilities and strengths. We also partner with employers and organizations that share our commitment to DEI, and we work to create inclusive workplaces that value diversity and provide opportunities for all.

We are committed to ongoing education and training to deepen our understanding of DEI issues and promote greater awareness and understanding among our staff, clients, and community. We also welcome feedback and input from our clients, families, and stakeholders to help us improve our programs and services and ensure that we are meeting the needs of everyone we serve.
