A board of directors provides strategic oversight, ensures the organization stays true to its mission, supports fundraising efforts, and upholds legal and ethical responsibilities.

Time commitments vary, but most boards meet monthly or quarterly, with additional time for reviewing materials, serving on committees, and attending events. Committing 4–10 hours per month is typical.

Many boards have a Give or Get policy, encouraging members to contribute personally or help raise funds. Even if it’s not required, making a meaningful gift shows your commitment.

Don't have fundraising experience? That’s okay! Fundraising for your organization can be simplified by leveraging opportunities like your nonprofit's participation in Big Day of Giving. Additionally, fundraising involves more than just asking for money. You may be able to help by thanking donors, sharing your story, making introductions, or promoting events.

Show up, stay engaged, ask questions, complete assignments, support the staff (if the organization has paid staff), and always be open to learning. Great board members lead by example.

Profile information and open board opportunities are provided by the nonprofits listed on GivingEdge.
