Wounded Veteran Run

Starting in 2011, Wounded Veteran Run was created by a local personal trainer as a way to promote physical fitness while simultaneously paying honor to her brother who was severely injured while serving in Afghanistan on 14 July 2010. While spending time with her brother at Walter Reed Hospital she came in contact with many other wounded veterans and wanted to find a way to help support all of our injured troops. An annual 10K, 5K, and 3K running/walking event on Memorial Day seemed like the perfect solution. Through this annual Run on Memorial Day each year, along with donations received throughout the year, since 2010 Wounded Veteran Run has donated over $396,839 to local veterans, veteran supporting non-profit organizations and military families.

Mission

Wounded Veteran Run is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization inspired by the daily perseverance and dedication of our nations combat wounded service members. Our goal is to raise awareness and donations for veteran supporting nonprofit organizations, and to implement programs to support and thank veterans within our community.

Needs

Student Veterans

Wounded Veteran Run is proud to support our local student veterans. Since 2015 we have donated to the Veterans Success Center at Folsom Lake College to help them with textbooks, computers, and other student needs. We also provided gift cards for gas and grocery to help over the holidays when their VA benefits are not received. We hope to continue this relationship and grow it to help Veterans Centers at other area colleges and universities. As of 2018 we have included American River College Veterans Center as a beneficiary.

Boots to Suits

Wounded Veteran Run is pleased to offer our Boots to Suits program which outfits veterans with interview attire so they are dressed for success as they head in to their new careers in the civilian workforce. Wounded Veteran Run will provide a new suit/outfit from Men's Wearhouse or Nordstrom Rack.

WVR Cares

WVR Cares aims to help local veterans obtain adaptive equipment so they can live as freely as possible. Here's a look at some things we have done through WVR Cares:

-Provided a scooter lift and hitch for a disabled veterans truck.

-Donated to a local veterans center to help fund their wheelchair accessibility project.

-Donated to help build an adaptive home for a wounded veteran in Davis, CA.

Funding that is unrestricted is directed to the operating cost for our major fundraiser, the Wounded Veteran Run, a 3K, 5K, 10K and Kids Fun Run held for the past 8 years in Folsom, California. Each year, the number of runners continue to increase. In 2019, we were able to direct 100% of the race proceeds from runners registration fees to our beneficiaries, which totaled $25,000. We were only able to do this because of the unrestricted donations and sponsorships that we received. For more information on the Beneficiaries of the annual Wounded Veteran Run, please see our program, Annual Beneficiaries.

The 10th Annual Wounded Veteran Run will be held Monday, May 25, 2020. We are always in need of volunteers; from course directors, to EMT and medical, to water assistants and more.
