$10,000 Goal

The Voices of California (VoCal) is a Sacramento chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), an international organization of over 1,000 chapters worldwide.  BHS provides a multiple of support functions for its chapters and manages its annual round of scored competitions of various types of males, female and mixed choruses and quartets. VoCal competes in the male competitions.  In the highest (international) competition (July '19) VoCal ranked 19th worldwide.  We practice three hours weekly to improve our competition scores and our skills at providing entertainment.  We work in the Sacramento metropolitan area to introduce youths to our musical style out of the conviction that our endeavors are good for mental health, personal development, and community.  To this end we operate an annual late summer camp for singers and field a youth chorus to compete whenever possible at the BHS annual mid-winter convention.

Our goals include fielding a broadly diverse male chorus of men of good character who love to sing, providing them with an outlet to improve their talents in singing and choreography, serving as a model for the way a community performing arts group should be organized and operated, and being a pillar of the local arts community by finding ways to engage in and promote shared events and create opportunities for live musical performance to occur.

Mission

The mission of the California Delta Chapter is to achieve musical excellence in competition and entertaining performances of the highest caliber. Our vision of harmony includes singing acapella music primarily in the barbershop style. It also reflects our commitment to inspiring musical excellence, ensuring each member's musical growth, and fostering singing in our communities.

Needs

VoCal has a musical director. He works full time in his career, accepting his work for VoCal for small compensation. It is our goal to assure and raise his level of compensation.

VoCal has an inadequate marketing budget to improve the community's awareness of our singing and entertainment. We regularly hear from first time audience members their puzzlement that they'd no idea that we existed. A greater marketing budget would improve this situation, leading to larger audiences at our shows and hence our budget into the future.

VoCal's sound only improves as our numbers rise and our singers get better. Recruitment efforts require funds to publicize our existence.

VoCal always requires funds for show expenses, for visiting artists, for costumes and for props.
