Urban Advocates & Achievers (UAA), founded in 2012, is a 501(c)(3), non-profit community-based organization located in Sacramento, California. UAA strategically coordinates and aligns resources of an entire community together to increase the educational success for students in the Promise Zone, Sacramento's federally designated high-poverty areas. UAA helps students meet A through G Requirements needed for State and University of California colleges. We assist students in the Education Gap that are below basic in math and language arts become proficient and above proficient student achievers. Our students and families receive a host of resources including individual assessments, financial literacy skills, Mentorship, Life Skills and 24-Hour on-line tutoring services.
The Office of Campus Community Relations (OCCR), at UC Davis, is in a Founding Partnership with UAA. The OCCR is committed to UAA as the lead organization to START the "Pipeline-to-Educational-Opportunities" for students to attend UC Davis through the UAA's Reservation for College Community Program, (RCCP).
The creation of UAA was inspired by the lack of educational equity in many school districts across the United States, the lack of 21st Century Learning opportunities that continues to affect outcomes for many students and families of color and to STOP the "School-to-Prison-Pipeline." The horrible and ugly truth is that the number of "Privatized Prisons" built across the United States are based upon data received from the Department of Education regarding students under-performing in reading, math, student suspensions, expulsions, and high school drop-out rates. It is even more shocking to learn that the "School-to-Prison-Pipeline" is determined as early as Pre-K through 3rd grade and especially affects students of color in the Education Gap, students with disabilities, and students "At Promise".
Urban Advocates & Achievers (UAA), mission is to provide students and families with a holistic and personalized approach that empowers and uplifts both the student and their family in their pursuit of academic achievement, excellence, educational equity, and economic sustainability for an improved quality of life.
The Advocacy Program empowers and trains families and students to advocate for themselves and understand their rights. The generous donations received to support the Advocacy Program will benefit the students in receiving the needed accommodations, related services in Special Education and for Students in the Academic Achievement Gap with Individualized Equity Plans to graduate from high school and prepared for college and/or career technical.
The generous donations received to support the Family Academy is another exclusive and unique component within UAA. The Family Academy will educate parents and enable them to play an active, collaborative, and supportive role in their child's educational experience. This program also provides families with community resource support, financial literacy, career and technical training pathways, money management, job training and "Re-Tooling", along with personal development opportunities all aimed at improving family economic sustainability.
The generous donations received to support UAA Tutoring Services will provide 24/7 one-to-one tutor support. Tutoring is a critical component of student success and building confidence. We understand that many times parents and/or guardians may lack tools to aid students to be successful in their coursework. Our student tutorial services are comprised of various educational platforms and components to help our students achieve maximum success! In addition, our program provides high quality tutorial services utilizing a culturally responsive pedagogy.
The generous donations to support students learning about STEM/STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). UAA has a phenomenal STEM/STEAM program and is also designated as a chapter member by the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). UAA's chapter name is UAA Sacramento NSBE Jr Chapter.
The general focus is to address the minimal access and information about STEM/STEAM programs and career paths for underserved minority communities and to increase the educational opportunities for these students in the educational pipeline. Students participate in informational workshops, various hands-on projects, and college field trips all aimed at ensuring that students can be creative and energized in visualizing their role in a variety of STEM/STEAM careers.
We are always in need of Advocates, Mentors and Volunteers. Now more than ever we are asking for school supplies for students such as notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, book bags, etc..
Our Advocates, Tutors and administrative staff can always use reams of paper, toner cartridges, and thumb drives, as well.
