The Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus (SGMC) cultivates joy through artistic excellence, fostering belonging, and uplifting the LGBTQIA+ community. We envision a vibrant regional community where the Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus is a beacon of artistic excellence and LGBTQIA+ visibility, inspiring social change, and a legacy of inclusion through the joy of music.

The Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus, established in 1984, began as an organization dedicated to building community and offering support for gay men within the Sacramento region. Over time, the chorus has expanded in membership and inclusivity, welcoming all individuals capable of performing in the TTBB vocal range. Its members represent the widest spectrum, including women, non-binary and transgender individuals, as well as straight allies all added to the mix of our original group dynamic, creating unlimited joy through song.

Through musical performances and outreach efforts, the chorus has become a significant presence in Sacramento’s music scene and serves as a representative voice for the diverse LGBTQIA+ community within the area. SGMC actively addresses intolerance and discrimination by fostering positive experiences and promoting understanding through its activities. The organization is committed to creating an enjoyable and affirming environment for LGBTQIA+ individuals and their allies who share a passion for music. Currently comprising over 140 members, the chorus maintains a strong emphasis on musical quality and engaging choreography. Annually, SGMC presents several concerts, participates in numerous community events and benefits, and organizes “pop-up” performances across the Sacramento community.

We strive to create and maintain an organization that values:

Joy: We ignite happiness and connection through vibrant performances that engage our audiences and enrich our communities.

Belonging: We cultivate an inclusive and welcoming space where our members and community feel seen, valued, and embraced.

Excellence: We strive for artistic brilliance, delivering performances that uplift and inspire at a high standard of performing arts.

Needs

As the Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus has grown, so has our ambition, and the costs that come with making that ambition a reality. To share our music with larger audiences we must perform in professional venues, which brings higher rental, production, and technical expenses. At the same time, expanding membership and richer programming mean more licensed music, scores, instruments, and upgraded sound and costume investments so every performance shines.

Our music fuels more than concerts. Through the SingOUT! Initiative, a new partnership with the Sacramento County Office of Education, and dozens of outreach appearances, we bring affirming, joy-filled experiences into schools, festivals, and community events. These pop-up performances and educational visits confront intolerance with visible love and belonging, helping LGBTQIA+ youth and adults feel seen and supported.

None of this would run without a small, dedicated professional staff and talented paid musicians who ensure our artistic quality and manage outreach, administration, and volunteer coordination. Their work turns rehearsal into reach, and volunteer energy into sustainable programs.

Your support keeps the chorus on stage, in schools, and at community events; funding venues, music licensing, instruments, sound systems, costumes, and the staff and musicians who make it all possible. Give today to help SGMC continue to create powerful performances and life-changing outreach across the region.

Equity Statement

As an arts organization and as part of our local and global communities, The Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus is committed to racial equity both internally through our work environment and externally through our programming.

• We are committed to ensuring that our artistic decisions and organizational policies reflect democratic principles of equity and justice.

• We understand that making decisions in a just and equitable manner considers critical issues of implicit bias and discrimination that requires concerted, thoughtful, intentional, and purposeful action.

• We believe that bringing together the membership, staff, and community partners with differing backgrounds and life experiences will enhance our ability to increase opportunities to promote justice and equity.

• Policies, programs, and activities will be administered to avoid discrimination and barriers to access and to show the benefits of diversity and inclusion personally for our membership and as a professional organization in how we execute our mission and vision.

• Accountability is essential. We strive to learn and grow from our shortcomings and lean into change rather than recoiling from admitting that we learn more every day and from every member how we can be more inclusive, and solution focused.

• We are committed to the just and equitable disbursement of resources through diverse hiring of contractors, selection of music and arrangements from diverse companies and creators of color, and support of other arts organizations within and outside of the LGBTQ+ community.

• We will strive to ensure our external program communicates not only to entertain but also to promote a message of justice, racial equity, and unity in our diverse audiences, with a focus on extending our reach to underserved communities and those who may not traditionally have access.
