Getting outside for fresh air and sunshine ☀️ identifying garden friends and garden pests 🐛 planting, harvesting, and eating food you've grown 🥬 Gardening is FUN (and also just happens to be educational and a great way to connect students to each other, their school community, personal health, and the land).

Founded in 2000, Davis Farm to School (DF2S) supports all Davis schools in their goals to provide farm and garden-based education, increase farm fresh foods in school meals, and reduce solid waste through recycling and composting programs.  DF2S is run primarily by a dedicated group of longtime volunteers.  We thank you for your support and welcome your interest in the organization.

Building & Supporting A Garden at Every School: DF2S supports gardens throughout all schools in Davis by providing garden grants, educating and connecting garden coordinators including mentoring new gardeners, coordinating work parties, and providing supplies.  We support school site garden coordinators and are a resource for lessons, supplies, volunteers, workshops, networking and communicating with the school district.  We also work with district administration to craft school garden policies and to create a garden to Career Technical Education (CTE) pipeline starting in elementary school.

Farm Field Trips: DF2S also organizes Farm Field Trips, open to all 2nd graders in the Davis Joint Unified District, and the Little Chefs Field Trip to the Davis Food Co-op, open to all 3rd graders in the District.  We hope to expand our offerings to include a program for each grade level, from 1st through 6th grades.

Increasing Fresh Food in School Meals: With California having Universal School Meals (Yay!) it's even more important now than ever to make sure our kids are being served delicious, nutritious and locally sourced produce.  We connect and collaborate, helping to get more fresh produce served to our students.

DF2S is a project of the nonprofit organization Davis Farmers Market Alliance.

Mission

The mission of Davis Farm to School is to create an educational and cultural environment in our schools that connects food choices with personal health, community, farms and the land.

Needs

Goal: Ensure there is a garden in every school.

We need funding to help establish and maintain school gardens at every school. Support for garden coordinators including purchasing supplies and providing training, mentorship and garden grants.

Goal: Expand field trip offerings.

DF2S currently offers field trips to all 2nd and 3rd graders in the Davis Joint Unified School District. Current offerings include: (1) Farm Field Trips to local farms for 2nd graders, and (2) Little Chefs Field Trip for 3rd graders to the Davis Food Co-op to learn about how food goes from farm to fork and to engage in farm-fresh cooking and tasting. We hope to expand our offerings to include a program for every grade level, from 1st grade through 6th grade.

Goal: Provide more farm-fresh food in school meals.

Funds to assist us in providing guidance, support, training and funds to increase farm-fresh local foods in school meals. All students deserve access to healthy delicious meals!

Goal: Recruit more garden volunteers or funds to pay for garden interns/coordinators.

Our program is primarily run by dedicated volunteers! We need volunteers or funds to pay student interns at every school. Volunteers tend to the garden and teach garden lessons to students.

We also are looking for gardening supplies such as seeds, plants, soil, compost, bark, decomposed granite, tools, sheds, etc.
