Getting outside for fresh air and sunshine ☀️ identifying garden friends and garden pests 🐛 planting, harvesting, and eating food you've grown 🥬 Gardening is FUN (and also just happens to be educational and a great way to connect students to each other, their school community, personal health, and the land).
Founded in 2000, Davis Farm to School (DF2S) supports all Davis schools in their goals to provide farm and garden-based education, increase farm fresh foods in school meals, and reduce solid waste through recycling and composting programs. DF2S is run primarily by a dedicated group of longtime volunteers. We thank you for your support and welcome your interest in the organization.
Building & Supporting A Garden at Every School: DF2S supports gardens throughout all schools in Davis by providing garden grants, educating and connecting garden coordinators including mentoring new gardeners, coordinating work parties, and providing supplies. We support school site garden coordinators and are a resource for lessons, supplies, volunteers, workshops, networking and communicating with the school district. We also work with district administration to craft school garden policies and to create a garden to Career Technical Education (CTE) pipeline starting in elementary school.
Farm Field Trips: DF2S also organizes Farm Field Trips, open to all 2nd graders in the Davis Joint Unified District, and the Little Chefs Field Trip to the Davis Food Co-op, open to all 3rd graders in the District. We hope to expand our offerings to include a program for each grade level, from 1st through 6th grades.
Increasing Fresh Food in School Meals: With California having Universal School Meals (Yay!) it's even more important now than ever to make sure our kids are being served delicious, nutritious and locally sourced produce. We connect and collaborate, helping to get more fresh produce served to our students.
DF2S is a project of the nonprofit organization Davis Farmers Market Alliance.
