Big Idea Theatre (BIT) operates under a uniquely democratic structure. No one owns Big Idea; instead, its artistic vision and future are shaped collectively by its members. These volunteer company members are selected for their dedication and artistic skill and are responsible for season selection, electing leadership, and managing the day-to-day operations of the company.

Founded in 2003, Big Idea restructured under new leadership in 2007. Since 2008, BIT has been based at 1616 Del Paso Boulevard in historic Old North Sacramento.  Our programming spans a wide range, from contemporary works to reimagined classics, reflecting our commitment to varied and engaging programming.

BIT has served as a launching ground for many artists who have gone on to work with respected regional companies, including Sacramento Theatre Company, Capital Stage, B Street Theatre, and Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Central to BIT’s mission is fostering a supportive, educational environment where artists can take risks and develop new work. The company is made up of members from diverse professional backgrounds, including students, educators, attorneys, state workers, and artists.

BIT is also committed to peer-based education in the theatrical arts, offering training in acting, directing, design, technical production, and theatre management. This focus has led to expanded programming under the banner “A BIT More,” which includes workshops, classes, staged readings, live performances, and other community events.

All BIT performances are open to the public, and auditions are regularly held and accessible to all.
