$10,000 Goal

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) advocates for gender equality in education, economic security, and leadership at the national, state, and local levels.  We empower women through scholarships, sponsorships, public policy advocacy, and training.

The Auburn AAUW Branch, established in 1949, provides scholarships to graduating high school students, women returning to college to complete an education, those moving from a 2-year college to 4-year university, and graduate students. We also support a number of “Trek” programs including Tech Trek (a science, technology, engineering and math oriented camp), Speech Trek and and monthly programs.

Our Branch members participate in a number of Interest Groups offering educational, active and social opportunities including book clubs, creative arts, bridge, gourmet, hiking, Great Decisions and other groups.

AAUW Auburn is affiliated with the national organization founded in 1881 to promote education and equity for women. While membership is open to women and men, the Auburn Branch has expanded membership opportunities to anyone who shares the same goals as we have which is to increase equity for women and girls through education funding, research on gender equity issues that matter in the lives of women and girls, and legal advocacy to challenge sex discrimination in higher education and the workplace.

Mission

AAUW-Auburn empowers women and girls by advocating for more women in leadership positions; closing the gender pay gap; and preventing sexual harassment & discrimination. We break down barriers holding women back from entering STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) careers. We accomplish our goals through advocacy, scholarships, education, and fellowship. AAUW members are a community that breaks through economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance.

Needs

Donations help AAUW Auburn meet its mission to provide scholarships to high school graduates, women returning to education, those moving from a two- to four-year university, and those entering a graduate program.

AAUW Auburn also hosts a Speech Trek competition which is open to all high school students from freshmen to seniors. Students present speeches in response to prompts. The top three local winners then face off against the top three winners from other AAUW Branches in the Sacramento Region (Auburn, Davis, El Dorado Foothills, Sacramento and South Placer – Roseville).

AAUW Auburn offers Tech Trek which is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math program for girls between 7th and 8th grade. The week-long camp happens on a University of California campus.

AAUW also provides educational programs to members and the public on a variety of current topics, issues and more.

Donations provide the following benefits:

• $1,000 = a full scholarship or 90% of a Tech Trekker camp fee

• $500 = one-half of a scholarship

• $250 = one-quarter of scholarship

Equity Statement

AAUW seeks to promote inclusion and awareness for all members and to create an equitable, sustainable and inclusive membership reflective of today’s world. Auburn AAUW recognizes the need to attract and retain members and to celebrate the diversity that all individuals bring.

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) committee aims to identify best practices for promoting diversity, equity and inclusion within Auburn AAUW and encourage all members to seek ways to incorporate inclusive practices into their branches and daily life.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are concepts that are often used interchangeably but mean quite different things.

Diversity: the condition of having or being composed of differing elements; the inclusion of different types of people (such as people of different races or cultures).

Equity: justice according to natural law or right – specifically freedom from bias or favoritism.

Inclusion: the act or practice of including and accommodating people who have historically been excluded because of their race, gender, sexuality, or ability.

Recognizing what makes us different and unique is important. By taking DEI into consideration, we build a better society.
