Windows To My Soul is a center for equine assisted psychotherapy where individuals and groups build the emotional and mental health skills necessary to live connected, empowered, and purpose-filled lives. We provide trauma focused mental health services to First Responders, Veterans, domestic violence survivors, individuals with developmental disabilities, cancer survivors, families, and others that might benefit from our program. Many of our clients come to us having seen or experienced some of the most horrifying realities of the human existence, resulting in debilitating depression, anxiety, nightmares and inability to cope in their day-to-day life.
The COVID-19 pandemic creates a "perfect storm" that threatens the mental health of many, particularly those with pre-existing mental health conditions. People who have experienced past traumas are more likely to develop new or worsening mental health symptoms. The COVID-19 pandemic is a unique trauma that threatens all of our lives, in a variety of ways, causing associated anxieties and deep depression. Some may develop debilitating worries about becoming infected with COVID-19 and the illness and situations that result. Human beings require social interaction and community to thrive. The safety guidelines necessary to keep us physically safe from COVID-19 infection have a profound effect on our mental health. In the last year, our practice has seen a significant increase in teenagers with suicidal ideation.
Our interventions are designed to affect the spectrum of PTSD symptoms and are based in contemporary research that explains the very real physiological/psychological impact of stress or traumatic experiences on the brain and body. All of the top trauma researchers believe that the path to healing and resilience is the ability to stay calm in stressful situations, and to build or maintain healthy, good-for-both relationships through connection to self and others.
We teach tools to help individuals learn/relearn how to regulate or achieve a state of calm in stressful situations. We use a set of universal principals to build connected, attuned relationships with horses in psychologically safe environments. These relationship skills are then transferred to the client's human relationships.
Our clients see improvements with their depression, anxiety, long-term memory, cognition, motivation, impulse control, and learn to manage their emotions.
