WellSpace Health is a non-profit community health system that provides comprehensive medical, dental, behavioral health, and supportive services to underserved people and neighborhoods in the greater Sacramento region.

WellSpace Health CRISIS System

Seeking long term solutions to the Sacramento region's behavioral health crisis, WellSpace Health has developed a continuum of health and behavioral health services that form the foundation of the Crisis Response Intervention Synchronizing Integrated Services (CRISIS) system in the greater Sacramento region. The model follows the SAMHSA National Best Practice for Behavioral Health Crisis Care, uniting typically disparate aspects of care to provide underserved people with high quality comprehensive care across the greater Sacramento region. Specifically, the model unites a system of 26 Federally Qualified Health Centers, the region’s largest Medi-Cal Behavioral Health System, and California’s second largest 988 Crisis Center.

988 Crisis Center

Since 1953 WellSpace Health has operated the region’s Suicide Prevention Hotline and today is California’s second largest 988 Crisis Center, answering 92,000 talk/text/chats made 24/7 to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and local hotlines. 95% of engagements with the WellSpace Health 988 Crisis Center are resolved within the engagement and do not require immediate response interventions. WellSpace Health is accredited by both the American Association of Suicidology and The Joint Commission for Behavioral Health and designated by SAMHSA as a Crisis Center.

Crisis Receiving for Behavioral Health (CRBH aka “Crib”)

The WellSpace Health Crisis Receiving for Behavioral Health (CRBH) is an innovative behavioral health program providing patients with a short-term (up to 24 hours) opportunity to voluntarily recuperate from a behavioral health crisis (substance infoxication, mental health crisis or both) in a safe and dignified manner while engaging them with wraparound supportive services and facilitating continuity of care following their CRBH session. CRBH is staffed 24/7 by healthcare professionals to provide medical monitoring, counseling, and connections to supportive services. Patients are transported to and from CRBH by authorized referral partners and by WellSpace Health’s Mobile Response Team.

Certified Community Behavioral Health Center (CCBHC) WellSpace Health was specially designated as Sacramento County’s first CCBHC in 2022 to provide a comprehensive range of mental health and substance use services, in addition to those provided as a Federally Qualified Health Center. The CCBHC model provides a vehicle to address decades-old challenges that have led to a crisis in providing access to mental health and substance use care.

Co-Occurring Behavioral Health Continuum of Care

Integrated Behavioral Health provides patients with recovery oriented mental health and substance use disorder interventions in a primary care setting.

Substance Use Disorder Treatment is a comprehensive range of services to provide the right substance use disorder treatment for each individual situation, including outpatient, withdrawal management, residential, and Medication Assisted Treatment.

Withdrawal Management (Detox) provides medically managed support in a residential environment for people who are withdrawing from the effects of substance use disorders.

Residential Rehabilitation is a modified therapeutic community that provides residential substance use disorder treatment.

Outpatient Treatment for co-occurring substance use disorders including outpatient counseling, groups, intensive outpatient, and perinatal (women and children).

Medication Assisted Treatment is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies to help sustain recovery from alcohol, methamphetamine, opioids, and other drugs.

Street Medicine: The WellSpace Health Street Medicine program deploys nurses to local neighborhoods to provide care to highly vulnerable people who are experiencing homelessness and are not accessing necessary primary care services.

Emergency Department & Hospital Navigators: WellSpace Health Community Health Workers help connect people in emergency departments to care and services to address their health and social determinants of health.

Mission

Achieving regional health through high quality comprehensive care.

WellSpace Health believes that everyone deserves to be seen, no matter who you are, where you come from, where you work or what place you call home. At WellSpace Health, we see you.

Needs

The individual needs of WellSpace Health patients vary and don't always align with traditional programs funded by partners in government, business, and philanthropy. Unrestricted support provides us the operational flexibility we need to respond to the unique unfunded needs of patients and communities. A few examples are below.

Behavioral Health Crisis Response: WellSpace Health provides 24/7 behavioral health crisis response services across the region. The WellSpace Health Crisis Center is accredited through the American Association of Suicidology, International Council of Helplines, and The Joint Commission.

Homelessness: People experiencing homelessness have unique needs that require a multi-disciplinary team that provides comprehensive care. WellSpace Health's system of care provides our unhoused neighbors with primary care, mental health, substance use disorder treatment, street nurses, respite, case management, and many other supportive services.

Uninsured: WellSpace Health is the largest provider of comprehensive healthcare services to people who remain uninsured in the Sacramento region. WellSpace Health provides this care because everyone deserves to be seen, no matter who you are, where you come from, where you work or what place you call home. At WellSpace Health, we see you.
