The Child Abuse Prevention Center

Reviewed by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation

The Child Abuse Prevention Center is a training, advocacy, and resource center dedicated to strengthening children, families, and communities. For over 45 years we successfully prevented child abuse by:

  • Implementing evidence-based prevention practices and programs
  • Collaborating with multi-disciplinary partners
  • Providing training and technical assistance to build capacity
  • Advocating for policies to strengthen children, families and communities

Annually, we serve over 100,000 children and caregivers and train 10,000 professionals. We conduct 30 distinct programs providing direct support to families including in-home services, supporting foster youth as they near emancipation, providing education on infant safe sleep, providing essential needs such as cribs and food in times of crisis such as the pandemic, and supporting pre-school children and their parents to prepare for school. The CAP Center has received national recognition with the Child Death Review Team that has identified causes of child death and recommended services, including Birth & Beyond and Black Child Legacy Campaign which have reduced child abuse cases. Likewise, the U. S. Department of Justice selected the CAP Center as one of five demonstration projects working to reduce child abuse fatalities and near fatalities.

Giving Activity

Mission

Our mission is to Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect. Our vision is for all children to grow up safe and healthy in nurturing families and communities.

Needs

Pack N Play cribs for families who do not have access to a safe place to sleep their baby, to continue to prevent sleep related child. Since 2012/14 before the campaign began, Sacramento County has had a 56% decrease in the rate of infant sleep related death amongst African American babies and a 65% decrease in the disparity gap between African American babies and other ethnic groups.

The Child Abuse Prevention Center provides direct service to the families by enrolling AmeriCorps members who are trained to strengthen and support families through evidence-based home visitation programs. Donations are needed to enroll additional members who can then serve more families.

The CAP Center is also in need of additional AmeriCorps members to provide one-on-one mentorship to foster youth throughout Northern California to improve their readiness for adulthood.

The CAP Center's Safe Sleep Baby program provides educational opportunities for families who are expecting a baby or who have just welcomed a newborn into their family. The CAP Center is in need of funding to create additional printed materials for our Safe Sleep Baby program so we can expand the educational outreach in languages other than English.

The CAP Center is in need of an upgraded database to evaluate information and provide valuable input. This database would allow us to reach out more effectively and efficiently to our donors and potential donors throughout Northern California and beyond.

Unrestricted funds are needed to benefit our numerous programs to prevent child abuse and neglect such as Birth and Beyond, Safe Sleep Baby, Foster Youth Initiative, and supports for family resource centers.

Equity Statement

The CAP Center is committed to fostering a culture where diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are not just a core values, but integral parts of our daily operations. Our internal Culture, Equity, and Inclusion Team actively works to ensure these principles are reflected in all aspects of our organization, while the board of directors prioritizes these values in our strategic objectives, ensuring that every decision and action is aligned with promoting an environment where all individuals feel valued, understood, and empowered.
