Sinfonia Spirituosa is a chamber orchestra dedicated to presenting bold, historically-informed performances on period instruments. Through vibrant, collegial exchange, the ensemble aspires to faithfully bring to life the broad spectrum of color, affect and rhetoric inherent in the music of the Baroque era. Their roster of strings, flute, oboe, bassoon, voice, harpsichord, organ, archlute, theorbo and baroque guitar allows for programing which displays an astonishingly wide variety of national styles and unique instrument combinations. The repertoire, which spans over 100 years of Baroque music, exemplifies the spontaneous, improvisatory character of this period, and showcases the startling, cosmopolitan harmonic language of the late 17th century, the rich complexity of the German baroque style, and the sumptuous textures and dramatic flair of the late French composers.

The members of Sinfonia Spirituosa lead multi-faceted careers as university professors, recording artists, soloists, conductors, chamber musicians and symphony players. They are active as teachers and performers on both period and modern instruments, and many are directors of their own ensembles specializing in early music, romantic music, new music, jazz and hot swing.

A central tenet of our vision is celebrating the music of the past while inspiring young musicians of the future. Through immersion in a creative rehearsal and performance environment, our Mentorship Program aims to stimulate and support promising high school, undergraduate, graduate, and young professional level instrumentalists and singers who are curious, open-minded, and committed to exploring original instruments and studying the musical language of the Baroque period.

Needs

Thanks to your generous support, we expanded our 2025-26 season again with an additional February concert! This special program, “Love: Mad, Sad, and True,” featured a lively happy-hour performance of French Baroque music, presented in partnership with Alliance Française and accompanied by wine and sandwiches generously donated by Di Arie Winery. The afternoon matinee concert featured exquisite, hand-crafted chocolates by the one and only Chef Steve. Both concerts included hidden valentines that treated lucky audience members to complimentary tickets to our May concerts. We were especially proud to showcase a smaller chamber ensemble that included the talented violist, Madeleine Chung, from Davis Senior High School as part of our Mentorship Program. One of our key goals moving forward is to sustain and grow this winter concert, which has quickly become a meaningful and community-centered addition to our season.

In addition to these more intimate performances, Sinfonia Spirituosa is committed to presenting two full-ensemble concert programs each year, including performances at Trinity Cathedral, where we are honored to serve as Artists-in-Residence. Depending on the repertoire, our ensemble ranges from 10 to 16 musicians, with each program costing between $18,000 and $25,000. These expenses support artist fees, per diem, travel and housing for our non-local musicians, rehearsal and performance venue rentals, transportation (including van rental for our harpsichord), professional audio and video recording, and essential marketing efforts such as flyers, posters, CapRadio spots, and social media outreach. Our upcoming May, 2026 concerts also include an exciting collaboration with dancers from The Sacramento Ballet—an artistic partnership we are eager to continue and deepen with your support.

Founded in 2018, with an unexpected pause during the pandemic years, Sinfonia Spirituosa is still a young ensemble—but one that has found its momentum and voice. We feel that energy on stage, and we hope you do too. With your continued support, we can build on this momentum, expand our artistic reach, and deepen our impact through both performance and education. We invite you to join our growing community of patrons and help sustain our passionate commitment to historically informed performance and mentorship for the next generation of musicians.
