Thelma Buchholdt was an immigrant woman who became the first Philippine-born woman legislator in the United States of America. She was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives for four consecutive terms, from 1974 through 1982. She was also a historian, author, community activist, attorney, and cultural worker.
At Sawaga River Press, we celebrate and want to share about Thelma Buchholdt's remarkable lifetime of community building and advocacy for equity and justice!

This book will be the first in a series of multilingual picture books on remarkable Filipina/x women in law, government, social activism, or culture bearing.
We publish multilingual books that celebrate children’s experiences in the Filipino diaspora. We value our connections and relationships with kapwa—our human and more-than-human relatives, elders, and ancetors—and the land. We advocate for social justice and indigenous worldview, wisdom, spirituality, and sovereignty.
We need funding for the production of 1,000 hardcover picture books.
