Sankofa Learning Excursions, founded in 2021, is a 501 (C)3 not for profit organization under the California and  Federal tax laws. The organization was established in 2021 for community involvement and scholastic achievement.

Local programs support mentorship and employment but lack culturally grounded, international travel opportunities that foster identity, resilience, and global citizenship. Sankofa Learning Excursions provides students from underserved communities with curated international experiences that reconnect them with their roots, expand networks, and build confidence, creativity, and purpose. This is not just travel—it is transformation, investing in the emotional health, cultural vitality, and future leadership of our communities.

Mission

Young adults in the United States—especially those transitioning into adulthood—are facing unprecedented levels of disconnection, stress, and limited opportunities for meaningful learning beyond traditional educational settings. These challenges are even more pronounced for young, disadvantaged Black individuals and other youth of color who have limited access to higher education or global learning experiences. As a result, these young people are often deprived of opportunities to explore their history, cultural identity, and place in the world.

Sankofa Learning Excursions aims to fill this critical gap by providing young adults—particularly Black and Brown youth from disadvantaged backgrounds—access to international travel and cultural immersion that fosters personal growth, mental wellness, and global citizenship. Through curated excursions, students can reconnect with their roots, expand their social networks, gain real-world learning experiences, and return home with strengthened confidence, creativity, and purpose.

By investing in this work, we invest in the emotional health, cultural vitality, and future leadership of our communities. Sankofa Learning Excursions offers not just travel, but transformation—and the opportunity to build a more connected, inspired, and globally aware generation.

Needs

A $3,000 donation will cover the needs of one student including:

1. Pre Travel Education and Training

2. Passport Fees

3. Travel, Insurance, and Excursions

4. Lodging and Meals.

Our yearly need is upwards of $90k - $150k. Reaching this goal on a yearly basis will impact the lives of 30-50 students each year and help us obtain our desired impact.

Equity Statement

Sankofa Learning Excursions is committed to advancing equity by ensuring that young people, especially Black and Brown youth from underserved communities, have access to transformative global learning opportunities that are too often out of reach. We recognize that systemic barriers, economic disparities, and historical inequities limit many young adults’ ability to explore the world, connect with their cultural heritage, and envision their place in a global society.

Our work is rooted in the belief that every young person deserves the chance to learn beyond the classroom, travel with dignity, and experience cultures that affirm their identity and expand their possibilities. We intentionally design programs that remove financial, social, and structural barriers so that students who have been historically excluded can participate fully and confidently.

Equity guides every aspect of our mission, from how we recruit participants, to how we build partnerships, to how we support students before, during, and after travel. By centering the voices, histories, and lived experiences of marginalized youth, we strive to cultivate a more just, inclusive, and globally aware generation of leaders.
