The Sacramento Fire Department & Community Foundation (SFDCF) supports the Sacramento Fire Department and its all-volunteer program – the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). When fire department resources are overwhelmed, Sacramento CERT is trained, prepared, and ready to deploy.
Sacramento CERT is proud of the recognition it has received for its mentoring and training CERTs from around the world who learned about our firefighter rehabilitation program and training for animal sheltering during disasters. This spring, in rain and 30 mph winds, Sacramento CERT led a multi-hazard disaster drill for Butte County and Redding CERTs. CERT provided Caldor Fire Base Camp support and staffed two animal shelters, as well as teaching animal sheltering and rescue to CERT programs across California as well as in Oregon.
During the height of COVID, CERT managed traffic for thousands of residents getting tested and immunized at Cal EXPO, as well as distributing food to those at home with or at risk of contracting COVID-19, and assisting with 12 mass vaccination sites across the city. More recently a specially trained team helped deploy the department’s Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 7 to perform search and recovery during the devastating Los Angeles fires. CERT volunteers often serve in mass casualty drills to help the fire department, airports and local hospitals stay at the ready, as well as acting as live victims for canine search dogs.
Further, Sacramento CERT is the only CERT in the state with HSI-trained instructors and a robust Emergency Medical Responder program approved by the Sacramento County Emergency Medical Services Agency. People often find CERT members volunteer-staffing medical tents at well-known Sacramento events (Farm to Fork and other festivals) and even national venues like the Junior Olympics.
When they are not responding to a disaster, CERT volunteers reach out to communities to help prevent future emergencies. Multi-lingual CERT volunteers are ramping up a new LISTOS program in the city to train families in how to keep their households safe and resilient.
As the number and severity of disasters continue to rise, so does the strain on city budgets. CERT’s all-volunteer cadre is committed to keeping Sacramento communities safe and resilient with the help of donations like yours.
