Founded in 1985 by Executive Director Dr. Kristine Corn, Ride to Walk's (RTW) therapeutic horseback riding program has been enhancing the lives of our local special needs community for nearly forty years, working with individuals from two years old through senior citizens. Dr. Corn, a respected Pediatric Physical Therapist with her own practice, purchased a pony in the early eighties to explore the effectiveness of hippotherapy with her patients. The children loved it, which made their treatment fun and gave Dr. Corn another tool to achieve successful results increasing their abilities.

What sets RTW apart from other equine therapy programs is the personal attention and supervision each rider receives from a licensed physical therapist at every session, starting with their initial intake and evaluation. Dr. Corn studies each rider's medical history and diagnosis, and assesses their strength, posture, mobility, range of motion, limitations, and level of communication when meeting them in person. She then designs a personalized treatment plan, incorporating activities and goals based solely upon the needs and abilities of that individual.

Many of our riders have neurological deficits stemming from birth trauma, head injury, spinal deformities, a genetic predisposition, stroke and the effects of drugs or alcohol during gestation. Our program also benefits individuals with cognitive and sensory processing disorders (i.e. autism), and those struggling with mental health issues such as chronic depression, anxiety, and emotional trauma. We enjoy an impressive success rate, and love helping people increase their abilities, social skills and confidence.

Ride to Walk's program operates year-round in a covered arena and, when weather permits, frequently uses horse trails, allowing for the opportunity to enjoy fresh air and the beauty of the ranch around them.

Mission

Ride to Walk's mission is to enhance the lives of children and young adults with neurological, cognitive, and physical disabilities by providing innovative therapeutic horseback riding activities that are recreational in nature and adapted to the individual's needs and abilities. Ride to Walk strives to provide a positive support system for individuals with disabilities, their parents/caregivers, and our community.

Needs

RIDING PROGRAM, General Donations --

This allows us to invest in improvements, equipment, and resources for the riding program we offer, which include purchase of food and supplies for our horses, implementation of necessary safety & structural improvements critical for rider and horse safety.

Join our BOARD OF DIRECTORS!

Ride to Walk is seeking professional, caring, dependable individuals who understand business dynamics and networking.

Collaboration and solid communication are key as we work together to enhance our existing program, establish goals to expand the riding program to serve more people, and plan creative fund raisers that will engage the community and reflect the spirit of Ride to Walk's mission to serve those with special needs. Our Board is always thrilled to partner with local corporate and philanthropic organizations as those opportunities arise.

Board members are required to attend our monthly Board meetings, with the goal and overall commitment of helping to grow and promote Ride to Walk in addition to supporting Board of Director approved activities and events.

VOLUNTEERS? -Yes, Please!

Ride to Walk would not be the successful organization that we are without volunteers that commit 4 hours per week assisting with the Riding Program(s) and maintaining the safety of all those we serve. We're currently looking for people 16 years and older in good health who are available Thursday afternoons or Saturday mornings (you're more than welcome to do both if you've got the time).

Our volunteers may also donate their time for ranch projects (such as general maintenance or enhancement) and Ride to Walk events, including fundraisers.

*We ask all volunteers for a minimum 6-month commitment.

SPONSORSHIP

We welcome sponsors who are able to make a monthly gift towards a rider's program fees. Sponsorships make a tremendous impact in the quality of life of a special needs child or adult who may not otherwise be able to afford it the program.

GIFT CERTIFICATES for local Feed, hardware and large building supply stores are always a welcome blessing!

Old Sheets, towels, and linens that we can cut up to use for rags at the ranch. If it's sunny there is a thin coat of dust and dirt that the breezes distribute and if it's wet weather, we have mud everywhere. We are ALWAYS in need of decent hand towels!

Equity Statement

At Ride to Walk Inc., we are committed to fostering a culture of equity, inclusion, and diversity in all aspects of our organization. We believe that every individual, regardless of their background, abilities, or circumstances, should have equal access to our Riding Program and services.

We are dedicated to creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and supported. We actively seek to eliminate barriers and biases. By embracing equity, we aim to create a more inclusive and equitable future where individuals of all backgrounds can thrive and benefit from riding.
