The Philippine National Day Association (PNDA) was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1994, but was established in 1975. The original board members of PNDA envisioned a community gathering which became the Philippine National Day Barrio Fiesta in Sacramento. PNDA’s evolution into a full-fledged service-based nonprofit organization saw it partaking in projects that focused on culture, education, and arts.

The first service offered to the Filipino community in 1991 was the Outstanding Filipino Youth Awards (OFYA) which recognized individual youth’s merit and provided scholarships to those looking to pursue a college education. Another key program offered by PNDA is the Filipino American Youth Leadership Conference (FAYLC) in 1996. This gathered youth at Sacramento State and provided fellowship and educational opportunities about Filipino culture.

Today, PNDA is supported by a volunteer board that wants to maintain the core ideals used to establish the organization, but rejuvenate them with an explicit focus on centering youth in design, membership, and sustainability. Our guiding values are borrowed from the Blackfoot Tribe’s guiding principles of Self-Actualization, Community Actualization, and Cultural Continuity. We label them as:

  • Kapwa: shared identity/self. We are a collective soul and this should not exploit each other

  • Bayanihan: Collaboration over competition. Mistakes are OK as long as we learn from those mistakes.

  • Creating Over Consuming: Helping our community rediscover the whimsy of creation. Through this form of autonomy, we reinvigorate our mental wellness and combat the effects of over-consumption prevalent in today’s world.

Mission

PNDA’s mission is to build an empowered Filipinx Community through:

- Engaging youth and families

- Developing leaders

- Providing educational, cultural & artistic wellness programs

- Promoting economic justice and equity

Needs

PNDA maintains that the programs we conduct are youth-centered and focused on keeping Filipinx culture and values alive, keeping their money within the community by buying local, supporting local artists and Filipinx-based programs and services, and is interconnected and thriving. Our model as we step together in this new iteration of the organization was formed through a shared analysis conducted by our board members this past January.

Our 2026 Strategic Plan is supported by 4 strategic initiatives acting as pillars to uphold our new shared vision.

First, PNDA wants to focus on relationship building that builds community with each other in and out of the Filipino community. Next, we are centering on Filipinx values by re-committing to protect our culture and values. Third, we are supporting advocacy especially for our rights as Fil Am, Fil Im and for other BIPOC/LGBTQIA+ and other marginalized folks. Lastly, we want to focus on project incubation that creates an economic & educational pathway to liberation for future generations to follow.

To ensure we can complete our goals to support our community, we need your help!

PNDA will continue to support our community with reimagined versions of our legacy programs:

- Outstanding Filipino Youth Award (OFYA) Scholarships – Our scholarships recognize high school seniors who are pursuing a college education. We want to recognize future leaders in our community that showcase their interest in preserving Filipino culture, and demonstrating academic merit. Your outstanding support can help us scale this award and begin establishing a pipeline for youth to be strong advocates for our community.

- Filipino American Youth Leadership Conference (FAYLC) – PNDA’s signature event, FAYLC is our intergenerational project that allows youth to learn about themselves and society while being empowered to use what they learn towards their future. We want to maintain the spirit of this program, but further encourage our youth participants by guiding them and receiving their input to construct a version that fits their needs in today’s world. If you are excited about the reimagined FAYLC, consider donating today!

- Youth Pop-Ups – PNDA’s newest service program which focused on utilizing third spaces to address mental health issues that affect our community. We want to elevate the core idea and begin incubating ideas that youth have. Our youth program model provides topics for youth as options, but they get a chance to design the event, create objectives, and receive funding for their idea through PNDA. Empowering youth this way allows us to also train them in program design. Your dollars today could be used to fund a future leader’s project.
