Kris and Phyllis’s worlds collided in 2018, when after more than 42 years, The Golden State Killer, responsible for 50 sexual assault attacks and 13 murders, was arrested. The two met at a hearing after the Golden State Killers’ arrest. They were nervous and scared about what would happen next and found comfort in sharing their experiences; soon, they met for lunch and became friends. Gay and Phyllis met while filming the HBO documentary “I’ll Be Gone In The Dark.” They were fast friends and enjoyed each other’s company. During the prosecution, Phyllis learned she had cancer, but that did not stop her from fighting for justice. As she battled cancer, she was determined to see her perpetrator sentenced to Life Without Possibility of Parole. Phyllis passed away shortly after but remains an inspiration for her courage, friendship, determination, and resoluteness in adversity. Kris and Gay created Phyllis’s Garden in her memory and are committed to providing survivors of sexual assault the strength, support, and resources they need to rediscover their voices, share their stories, and find hope on their path to healing.
