NextGen Policy

Reviewed by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation

California’s low-income populations and communities of color are disproportionately and deeply affected by interwoven layers of social, economic, environmental, and racial inequity. Unfortunately, the voices and ideas of impacted communities are the least heard in the policy decision-making process.

NextGen Policy (NGP) is a Black-led, Sacramento-based organization working to advance policies and create programs that serve California’s low-income communities and communities of color. Since 2016, NGP has been committed to creating a more equitable and prosperous California. We work to elevate the voices of impacted communities through legislative action, strategic communications, and grassroots power-building. Some of the key issue areas we work in include:

  • Climate and Environmental Justice

  • Education Equity

  • Economic Prosperity

  • Digital Equity

  • Solving Food Insecurity

  • Inclusive Democracy

Our Executive Director Arnie Sowell was the Policy Director for five California Assembly Speakers and was named one of the Sacramento Bee’s 2023 Black Change Makers. We have a dedicated staff that bring their personal and lived experiences to tackle the issues that are most important to them. NGP has achieved a track record of solid success, having helped to significantly improve the lives of millions of Californians. A contribution to NGP will help us continue our fight for equity and justice for all.

Mission

NextGen Policy (NGP) fights to advance social, racial, gender, environmental, and economic justice for underrepresented and underserved communities in California.

Needs

NGP is seeking general operating funding to support our program based in Sacramento. This funding will support all aspects of our work - including personnel, event costs, and other programmatic needs. We also have the long-term goal of expanding our team, so that we may dedicate more time to our issue areas.

Equity Statement

NGP believes justice begins with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and these principles are the foundation on which our work is built. We focus on serving communities which have been historically excluded and are systemically underrepresented within our state government. We strongly support policy and program solutions to combat inequities that have been perpetuated by systems of institutional discrimination and oppression.

The team at NextGen Policy is composed of dedicated, thoughtful, and action-oriented policy and communications experts whose work centers on equity and justice for everyone who calls California their home. We value diverse voices, integrity, and lived experiences to guide our internal policies and practices as well as essential elements of our successful policy development and communications strategies.

By working together, we believe a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and more prosperous California is possible.
