Mission

To empower, educate, and elevate Black media professionals while advancing diversity and equity in newsrooms, amplifying authentic stories about the Black community, and mentoring the next generation of communicators.

Needs

The Sacramento chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ Sacramento) serves as a vital bridge between media professionals and the diverse communities of the Greater Sacramento region. As local newsrooms continue to face economic challenges, shrinking staff resources, and evolving audience demands, the need for culturally competent journalism, equitable representation, and trusted community storytelling has never been greater.

NABJ Sacramento works to support Black journalists and media professionals while strengthening the pipeline for future storytellers through mentorship, training, and community-centered programming. However, sustaining this work requires meaningful partnership beyond the journalism industry itself.

The chapter relies on support from community members, businesses, educators, and civic organizations to expand access to professional development programs, student outreach initiatives, and public forums that promote media literacy and informed civic engagement. Community investment helps ensure that emerging journalists — particularly students and early-career professionals from underrepresented backgrounds — have access to mentorship, networking opportunities, and career pathways that might otherwise be unavailable.

Additionally, NABJ Sacramento seeks community collaboration to foster dialogue between journalists and residents, helping news organizations better understand and accurately reflect the experiences, concerns, and achievements of local communities. Increased community participation strengthens trust in media while elevating voices that have historically been underrepresented or misunderstood.

Financial sponsorships, in-kind contributions, volunteer engagement, and program partnerships are essential to sustaining workshops, scholarships, youth engagement efforts, and community events that advance inclusive storytelling and equitable access to journalism careers.

By investing in NABJ Sacramento, community partners help build a stronger local media ecosystem — one that promotes accountability, representation, and informed communities. Supporting the chapter ultimately strengthens democracy at the local level by ensuring journalism reflects and serves all voices in the region.

Equity Statement

NABJ Sacramento is committed to advancing equity, inclusion, and belonging within journalism and the communities we serve. We believe equitable representation in media is essential to strengthening democracy, building public trust, and ensuring that all communities are accurately and fairly reflected in news coverage.

Our chapter works to dismantle barriers that have historically limited access to journalism careers for Black professionals and other underrepresented voices. We actively promote equitable opportunities through mentorship, professional development, leadership advancement, and pipeline programs that support students and emerging journalists.

NABJ Sacramento also advocates for newsroom cultures that value diverse perspectives, culturally competent reporting, and ethical storytelling practices. We encourage collaboration between journalists and community members to foster mutual understanding, accountability, and trust.
