ABOUT THE LIGONS FAMILY

Two kids fell in love in the 9th grade and married in Lake Tahoe on a cold, snowy day in 1994. From this union, Jerold and La Shawn loved and raised three incredible game changers: La Shawnna, Shon Josef and Jordan. They taught them to leave their stamp on every place they go, to always love one another, to go to college and to one day give back to their community.

Once Jerold graduated from University of California, Davis on a football scholarship, the family decided to make Sacramento their home. Each child went to a different Sacramento high school around the city: La Shawnna to Laguna Creek, Shon Josef to Sac High, and Jordan to River City. This only expanded their bounds of giving, hence why the Ligons Scholarship aims to serve across multiple school districts in their hometown.

La Shawnna is now a Registered Nurse after graduating from San Jose State University (‘09) and Lakeview College of Nursing (‘12). Shon Josef is currently attending Howard University School of Dentistry in Washington, D.C. after completing his undergrad degree from Arizona State University (‘12). Jordan is now a multimedia journalist after graduating cum laude from Point Loma Nazarene University (‘16).  Jerold is the Vice President of the Making Waves Foundation and La Shawn is retired after 33 years as a Pharmacy Technician with Kaiser Permanente.

While laughing and cherishing their time together, the Ligons family constantly brainstorms ideas on how to be better people and various ways to make their local communities the best for others.

Jerold and La Shawn realized early on to love their three children (and four grandchildren!) more than they love themselves. Now, their family will love their community and make it their mission to give back to those who gave so much to them.

Giving Activity

Mission

The Ligons Scholarship Foundation has a mission to help one academic student at a time while giving back to our community.

The Foundation was established in 2019 with a goal to give back to local high schools in Sacramento. We award a $500 scholarship to assist students with expenses as they transition to college.

The three high schools were selected by design, they are the high schools where our three children, La Shawnna Tyler, Dr. Shon Josef Tyler, DDS and Jordan Ligons graduated from. Our children were assisted by others along the way to help them reach their educational goals and it was important to us to give a little something back to these communities and support other students to achieve their educational goals.

This investment of the Ligons Scholarship Foundation in our local communities can create individuals to envision enhancements for themselves, their future and the community at large—helping one student at a time.
