Jan Ken Po Gakko is a non-profit parent cooperative program that aims to educate children and their families about Japanese-American culture through exploration in language, music, arts and cooking.  The mission of Jan Ken Po Gakko is to build a bridge from the past to the present for understanding, interpreting, and sharing our rich cultural heritage with our children.

The name, Jan Ken Po Gakko, was adopted from a Japanese children’s game, it is an Americanized version of Jan Ken Po (paper-scissors-stone). The name illustrates the emphasis the parents wanted to place about learning Japanese culture within an atmosphere of fun. Jan Ken Po is played by at least two persons and is symbolic of our two countries, Japan and America, and the bridging of our two cultures.

Mission

To educate children and their families about Japanese-American culture through exploration in language, music, arts and cooking.

Needs

As Jan Ken Po Gakko grows and settles into our new home at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento, we have several immediate needs to support our students and programs. We are working to create a safe, organized space with locking indoor storage sheds and uniform clear storage bins to properly store instruments and materials.

With the expansion of our program and class sizes, we also need additional Taiko drums for the 3rd-grade class, cooking equipment, and Japanese board games to support hands-on cultural learning. We are building the Jan Ken Po Gakko Library and are seeking books and craft supplies to inspire creativity and exploration.

Your support helps us create a welcoming, enriching environment where students can learn about Japanese culture, connect with their community, and grow.
