$10,000 Goal

It is our mission to use sport fishing as a vehicle to mentor children and create real moments of truth between our angler mentors and our angler participant. The Hooked on Fishing Not On Violence (HOFNOV) program was founded in 2011. In the past five years, the program has provided nearly 1,000 children and teens with the opportunity to participate in our fishing derbies and camping trips that are held several times during the spring and summer fishing seasons.  This program is uniquely designed to expose inner-city at-promised [1]children to the art and sport of fishing. HOFNOV is a nice fit for Sacramento because of the River City’s proximity to rivers, lakes, several streams, and creeks. We have found that fishing breaks down a multitude of barriers while reducing behavioral re-direction. Not only is this activity enjoyable to the children, but it is a physical activity that increases health and fitness.  This is important because one of the most astounding risk factors for at promised youths is the extraordinarily high rates of childhood obesity and adult-onset II Diabetes.

Mission

It is our mission to use sport fishing as a vehicle to mentor to children and create real moments of truth between our angler mentors and our young angler participants.

Needs

We need funding to help support our fishing and healing circle program to expand our outreach into the community.

Equity Statement

Hooked on Fishing Not on Violence (HOFNOV) is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable organization where all employees, volunteers, participants, and community partners feel respected, valued, and empowered to thrive.

We embrace and honor differences across race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, national origin, ability, education, and lived experience. We recognize that equity requires more than equal access—it requires intentional action to remove barriers, address systemic inequities, and create environments where all voices are heard and affirmed.

HOFNOV is dedicated to maintaining a nondiscriminatory approach across all aspects of our work, including employment, volunteer engagement, leadership development, program design, and service delivery. Our commitment to equity is reflected in our healing-centered, culturally responsive programs and in how we show up for the communities we serve—particularly youth and families who have been historically marginalized and disproportionately impacted by trauma, violence, and the justice system.

We strive to model equity and inclusion within the nonprofit sector by leading with humility, accountability, and continuous learning. By valuing lived experience, practicing active listening, and promoting fair and respectful treatment for all, HOFNOV works to build an organizational culture—and a community—rooted in dignity, belonging, and shared humanity.
