It is our mission to use sport fishing as a vehicle to mentor children and create real moments of truth between our angler mentors and our angler participant. The Hooked on Fishing Not On Violence (HOFNOV) program was founded in 2011. In the past five years, the program has provided nearly 1,000 children and teens with the opportunity to participate in our fishing derbies and camping trips that are held several times during the spring and summer fishing seasons.  This program is uniquely designed to expose inner-city at-promised [1]children to the art and sport of fishing. HOFNOV is a nice fit for Sacramento because of the River City’s proximity to rivers, lakes, several streams, and creeks. We have found that fishing breaks down a multitude of barriers while reducing behavioral re-direction. Not only is this activity enjoyable to the children, but it is a physical activity that increases health and fitness.  This is important because one of the most astounding risk factors for at promised youths is the extraordinarily high rates of childhood obesity and adult-onset II Diabetes.

Mission

The mission of Hooked on Fishing Not on Violence is to empower youth through mentorship, leadership development, and healing-centered experiences that help them build confidence, make positive life choices, and envision a brighter future.

Through outdoor activities, community engagement, and culturally responsive programming, HOFNOV connects young people with trusted mentors, supportive peers, and meaningful opportunities that promote personal growth, resilience, and violence prevention.

Needs

HOFNOV relies on community support to expand our youth programs and reach more young people across Sacramento County. Funding helps us provide safe, structured environments where youth can build positive relationships, learn leadership skills, and participate in healing-centered activities that strengthen both individual well-being and community connections.

Donations support:

• Youth leadership and prevention programs through partnerships with initiatives like Elevate Youth California

• Mentoring and healing-centered circles that provide safe spaces for youth to share, learn, and grow

• Outdoor experiential programs including fishing excursions and nature-based activities that build trust, teamwork, and confidence

• Community outreach efforts that connect young people with positive role models and supportive networks

Your support helps HOFNOV continue creating life-changing experiences for youth who need guidance, encouragement, and opportunity.

Equity Statement

Hooked on Fishing, Not on Violence (HOFNOV) is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable organization where all employees, volunteers, participants, and community partners feel respected, valued, and empowered to thrive.

We honor and celebrate differences across race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, national origin, ability, education, and lived experience. We recognize that equity goes beyond equal access—it requires intentional action to identify and remove barriers, address systemic inequities, and create spaces where every voice is welcomed, heard, and respected.

HOFNOV maintains a strong commitment to nondiscrimination and fairness across all aspects of our work, including employment, volunteer engagement, leadership development, program design, and service delivery. Our programs are designed with a healing-centered and culturally responsive approach that reflects the lived realities of the communities we serve—particularly youth and families who have historically experienced marginalization, trauma exposure, and systemic inequities.

We believe meaningful change begins with listening, learning, and partnership. By valuing lived experience, practicing accountability, and promoting fairness and respect in all interactions, HOFNOV works to cultivate an organizational culture—and a broader community—rooted in dignity, belonging, opportunity, and shared humanity.
