The Hands & Hoofs Experience is a day-long program offered monthly from March through November. Our program, supported by local volunteers, is an outdoor experience on a small, private ranch in Sacramento County. We create social-emotional learning opportunities for youth and adults through connection to animals, including horses, donkeys, goats, sheep, and llamas. Our participants reflect on their experience through artistic and musical expression. We anticipate serving over 150 participants per year. We measure our success through solicitation of direct feedback at the close of each day’s program and written surveys distributed to participants. Our goal is to connect all youth, including those who are neurodivergent, have experienced trauma, and/or are a member of a minority group, through interactive experiences with animals and each other.

Our Equine Assisted Program (EAP) is a non-riding program that fosters social connections and cultivates life skills such as confidence, creativity, problem solving, and empathy. The animals at the center of our programming each have their own personalities and unique needs, and most have been rescued from traumatic pasts.  Our innovative program for healing provides an opportunity to increase self-awareness, improve communication skills, and build relationships. Donations through community support ensures we can offer our program free of cost to all interested youth.

Mission

Hands & Hoofs offers Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) programs to youth and adults, regardless of ability to pay, to promote deeper connection with the animals, each other, and themselves in a nonjudgmental environment. The program incorporates art, music, social-emotional learning, and inclusive practices through a fun, safe, and accepting outdoor experience.

Needs

Hands & Hoofs currently operates at a small, private ranch, the use of which has been graciously accommodated by the owners. This allows us to create program spaces and opportunities that would otherwise not be possible. Grants, donations, and sponsors sustain our operation and allow the program to continue to be offered to participants, regardless of ability to pay. The camps are highlighted with horses, donkeys, goats, sheep, and llamas that all need good nutrition and care as well as farrier work and regular veterinary care, which is all part of our program costs. The program costs also include liability insurance, art supplies, training of our volunteers, equipment for the horse arena, upkeep of program spaces, and more. Volunteers are the driving force of our program, both on program days as well as behind the scenes to support operations. We are always looking for new volunteers to join our team!

Equity Statement

Hands & Hoofs youth programs welcome all youngsters ages 7 through 14 from any and all backgrounds. No participant will be turned away due to socioeconomic status, race, gender, orientation, disability, or association with any other protected class. All volunteers, participants and parents are expected to promote a welcoming and accepting environment, with respect and compassion for all people and animals. Each participant is guided one-on-one, in the arena with the animals, by an experienced/trained horse handler. Adult supervision and support throughout the day are integral to the program.

We anticipate expanding our offerings this year to adult populations in need of additional connection, such as LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, disabled, and veterans. Additionally, youth ages 14-18 may participate through volunteering with adult mentorship. In the future, we plan to offer programs to meet the needs of a wider range of youth.
