The Friends of the Folsom Library was originally formed in 1993 to raise funds to open a new public library in Folsom after budget cuts resulted in the closing of the existing Folsom branch of the Sacramento County library.
Fast forward to today, with the Folsom Public Library now well established as the most visited library in Sacramento County, the all-volunteer Friends still work diligently to supplement the Library's annual budget, enabling them to provide a wonderful array of free programs and services for people of all ages in our community.
Funds raised on Big Day of Giving this year will help fund the My First Library Card program, with the goal of inspiring a new generation of readers and setting Folsom's kindergarteners on the path to success. As part of the My First Library Card program, Library staff will visit many kindergarten classes across Folsom and acquaint students and their families with all that the Folsom Public Library has to offer. Upon their first visit to the Library to get their library cards, the kids also receive a new book to take home and keep! We know that when children have access to books, stories, and learning tools early in life they do better in school and beyond. Introducing families to the technology, digital resources, and learning tools available at the Library when kids first start school helps establish the Library as a natural part of family life and a resource that can be utilized for years to come.
Every $5 donated supports the My First Library Card program for one student. A donation of $125 can fund the program for a whole class of kindergarteners!
