Fix Our Shelters

A nonprofit organization

Fix Our Shelters is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2023 with a focus on creating a more humane experience for all animals, but especially those in, entering & exiting shelters, particularly municipal shelters.

Mission

We are the watchdog organization that demands accountability, transparency, and oversight of animal shelters across our state and country. We represent and defend the best interests of animals both inside and outside shelter walls that are negatively affected by the policies, actions, programs or laws related to animal shelters and Municipal Animal Care Service providers. We work to educate lawmakers and the public about the plight of animals in our communities through public awareness campaigns and advocacy. We partner with and support other animal advocates and Rescue organizations.

Needs

Funding for spay/neuter resources.

Funding to assist in medical needs of rescue animals.

Funding for activities related to changing laws to benefit animals

Equity Statement

Fix Our Shelters believes equity means ensuring every community has access to safe, transparent, and humane animal services. We recognize that animal shelters too often fail to serve low-income areas and communities of color, where neglect, lack of resources, and poor oversight lead to unequal outcomes for both animals and people. We advocate for systems that treat all individuals with dignity, and we support whistleblowers and community members who speak out against injustice in the sheltering system.

Our work centers on holding institutions accountable and pushing for policies that protect the most vulnerable. We oppose any practice that prioritizes convenience or cost over fairness and safety. Equity to us means creating adoption, foster, and support systems that are truly inclusive and responsive, and making sure shelters serve the entire community, not just a privileged few.
