The Foster Youth Education Fund (FYEF) exists on a simple but powerful belief: resilience should be met with opportunity. Our mission—and our very existence—is simple: to ensure that former foster youth, who have already overcome tremendous adversity, have a real and supported path to succeed in higher education.
The Foster Youth Education Fund (FYEF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping former foster youth in the Greater Sacramento region pursue higher education and vocational training. Youth who have experienced foster care often face significant financial and systemic barriers that make completing college or career programs especially challenging. Since 2002, FYEF has helped remove these barriers by providing scholarships and laptops to students enrolled in colleges, universities, and trade schools throughout the Capital Region.
Each year, FYEF awards an average of 80 scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $2,500 to help cover essential expenses such as tuition, housing, transportation, and food. With approximately 90% of scholarship recipients successfully completing the semester for which they receive funding, FYEF’s programs demonstrate strong outcomes in helping foster youth persist in their education. By combining financial support, resources, and community partnerships, FYEF empowers foster youth to build stable, independent futures and contribute positively to their communities.

Equity Statement
At Foster Youth Education Fund (FYEF), we recognize that former foster youth face unique challenges on their path to higher education. Our mission is to bridge the gap for these resilient individuals, who often journey towards academic success without parental support or a traditional family structure. With only 3% of former foster youth in California achieving a college degree, we understand the critical need for dedicated resources and support systems.
FYEF is committed to fostering an equitable educational landscape, where former foster youth in the Sacramento region are not only encouraged but also empowered to pursue their academic dreams. Our approach is rooted in the belief that access to higher education is a right, not a privilege. We provide scholarships for tuition, books, computers, and campus transportation, addressing the financial barriers that often hinder the educational progress of these determined students.
We strive to create a nurturing and inclusive environment that recognizes and values the diverse experiences of former foster youth. By offering financial assistance and moral support, we aim to be a catalyst for positive change, helping these young adults to break the cycle of adversity and achieve their full potential. FYEF is proud to be a community-supported initiative, standing as a testament to what can be accomplished when we come together to uplift and empower the most vulnerable among us.
