Currently there are thirty-six Filipino-American National Historical Society (FANHS) chapters in existence.  The FANHS Sacramento-Delta chapter is the second oldest chapter in the country, having been formed in 1988. Initially, it had a large membership, but as members aged it became difficult to recruit younger more Americanized members with less connection to their Filipino heritage. FANHS Sacramento-Delta chapter maintained its mission and adapted by obtaining its own chapter non-profit status in 2017.  In 2020 the chapter launched its first scholarship award program, giving two local students $500 awards each. The following two years the award increased to $1,000 each with four students receiving awards each year.                                                                                                                                                                                    ..

Mission

The purposes of the Filipino American National Historic Society, Sacramento-Delta Chapter are to conduct interviews and research, promote and disseminate published works on Filipino American history; provide a repository for research and gathered materials; promote and hold forums and public programs; develop an interest in Filipino American history among younger members of the Filipino American community; offer college scholarships and sponsor fund raising events to accomplish these purposes.

Needs

FANHS' scholarship program is budgeted to award five scholarships of $1,000 each to deserving Filipino American college students, a total budget of $5,000.

FANHS' events program includes hosting a minimum of three events each year, including a picnic, film festival and reunion. The events budget is $2,000, the funds to be allocated to each specific event as necessary.

FANHS lack of paid employees and its otherwise low overhead costs allow it to manage a general operating budget of $2,000. Therefore, FANHS needs volunteers, both adult and young people (high school age and older) to assist at both its own events and also third-party events such as the Filipino Fiesta where it maintains an informational booth. Skilled volunteers are also needed to conduct interviews and operate recording and digital archiving equipment.

The FANHS board of directors consists of 5 board members, including four officers and a voting member at large. Members are focused on accomplishing FANHS' multiple missions, including archiving Filipino family history, fostering an awareness of Filipino culture and assisting Filipino young people to be successful in their education endeavors.

Generally, the archiving has been accomplished using the equipment furnished by student volunteers or their friends, which results in limited interviews when students are not available. Therefore, the budget for this year will include a need for an additional $3,000 to purchasing a video camera and computer equipment for archiving.
