In the early hours of March 10, 2013, Lawrence "Mikey" Partida, a local Davis resident, was violently attacked in a hate crime aimed at his sexual orientation. In response, his mother along with concerned citizens of the Davis community formed the Davis Phoenix Coalition (DPC). DPC is a grassroots, organization that works to create a community where everyone is safe respected and free from violence. Some of the services provided by the Davis Phoenix Coalition include anti-bullying initiatives, hate crime awareness, diversity awareness and training with the long-term goal of building a community resource center for Yolo County citizens. Starting in 2017, the Davis Phoenix Coalition began offering a facilitated LGBTQ+ youth group meeting space for youth in Yolo County. This is an extension of the support group for parents of gender fluid children that has been meeting since 2015. In 2021 the Davis Phoenix Coalition launched a series or leadership workshops for Spanish speaking moms in the Davis school district. Already they have made an impact at the district's strategic planning meeting, the Yolo county youth road map to the future focus groups and in advocating for and receiving a music section for mariachi music at a Jr. High.
