Davis Forest School is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) outdoor education and nature play organization based in Northern California. We create immersive, land-based learning experiences that center curiosity, connection, and community. Our programs invite children into a deeper relationship with the natural world through free play, exploration, artistic expression, storytelling, active games, and quiet observation — all held outdoors, year-round.

Since our founding, we’ve more than doubled the number of children we serve each year. In 2024 alone, we reached nearly 600 children across our Davis and Sacramento locations — and we’re still growing!

We believe every child deserves access to nature. Outdoor education is not a luxury — it is a vital foundation for well-being, resilience, and a lifelong sense of belonging. Yet too often, access to green spaces and nature-based learning is shaped by systemic barriers rooted in race, class, and privilege. At Davis Forest School, we are committed to equity in the outdoors. Through our equity fund, we offer reparations-based financial support and need-based tuition assistance to ensure that no child is turned away due to financial hardship. Roughly one-third of our students receive some form of support to make their participation possible.

We hold our programs on the ancestral lands of the Patwin Wintun (Davis area) and the Nisenan people (Sacramento area), and honor the deep, ongoing relationship these communities have with the land. Their knowledge, stories, and stewardship are foundational to our work.

When you support Davis Forest School, you’re helping us grow a future where all children — regardless of background or income — can feel a sense of wonder, freedom, and belonging in nature.

Mission

Davis Forest School exists to provide child-led, transformative alternative education spaces in the outdoor environment that fosters learning through exploration, creative expression, play, and nature connection. At Davis Forest School, we are committed to equity in the outdoor space.

Needs

In 2024, Davis Forest School provided $24,801.80 in tuition assistance and reparations to ensure that every child — regardless of background or financial means — could access the healing and joy of nature-based learning.

This commitment to equity is central to who we are. But last year, we received only a fraction of that amount back in community donations.

At the same time, our operational costs continue to rise. Our land usage fees alone — essential for maintaining access to the natural spaces where we hold our programs — now total $14,500 annually across all sites, and those fees have increased this year.

As our programs grow, so does the need. To remain accessible without compromising the quality of our offerings or the sustainability of our staff, we need our community to show up for us.

Your donation helps us say yes to families who might not otherwise be able to afford nature-based education — and keeps our programs rooted in equity, access, and belonging.

Equity Statement

At Davis Forest School, we believe that access to nature is a birthright, not a privilege. Our mission is to promote environmental justice and educational equity in the outdoors, ensuring that all children — regardless of race, background, or financial means — have the opportunity to learn, play, and grow in connection with the land.

We offer reparations-based scholarships for Black and Indigenous families and need-based tuition assistance for economically disadvantaged families. In 2024 alone, we provided $24,801.80 in financial support, and we have never turned away a family due to inability to pay.

Equity is at the core of everything we do. We are committed to building a future where diverse communities feel welcomed, reflected, and empowered in outdoor spaces.
