Mission

The California State Sheriffs' Association Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that was formed in 2005 to provide education and training services to the 58 Elected Sheriffs of California, their departmental employees and other members of the California State Sheriffs' Association, thus enabling them to improve the delivery of Law Enforcement services to the citizens of this State.

Needs

Law Enforcement Week -- this program takes place the first week of May in correspondence with the California Peace Officers' Memorial Ceremony and is designed to recognize the fallen officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. In addition to donations helping fund our trainings for Law Enforcement Week, this funding will also go towards recognizing this year's honorable CSSA Medal of Valor Recipients.

Red Ribbon Week -- this program takes place the last week of October in correspondence with National Red Ribbon Week. Funding for this program goes towards raising awareness and educating California children of the harmful and irreversible effects of Drug Abuse. Sheriff's Office personnel distribute red wristbands and/or ribbons to students across California, in the effort to remind them to "Say No To Drugs."

Scholarship -- The John Sully Second-In-Command Scholarship Award was designed for college bound students throughout California and is intended to honor the memory of former Sonoma County Undersheriff John Sully. Our hope is that his example and this scholarship will inspire students to a well-lived life in service to others.

Training -- an important part of our mission is training. In order to keep the 58 Elected Sheriffs and their departmental staff knowledgeable on the ever-changing laws, the Foundation is constantly in need of funding for these various trainings.

Equity Statement

To further enhance the strength of the Sheriffs' voices, the Associate Membership Program was authorized in 1984. This program permits interested law-abiding citizens the opportunity to become Associate Members of California State Sheriffs' Association.

California Sheriffs and the California State Sheriffs' Association have established the following goals:

- Updating knowledge of modern Law Enforcement science and technology and providing this educational training to sheriffs' personnel.

- Developing and maintaining programs, policies and procedures that will enhance public confidence in the sheriff's criminal detection, prevention and apprehension capabilities.

- Reinforcing relationships at the state level with the governor, attorney general, state legislature and other state officials as to the needs, requirements, resources and duties to enable the sheriffs to provide effective and efficient Law Enforcement in their counties.

- Jointly addressing the unique problems of all California sheriffs and resolving the challenges collectively through the association and periodic meetings of all sheriffs.

- Maintaining the role of Sheriff as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer in the county.
